My brother in law is trying to negotiate a deal on a 2000 bmw 323i.

It's currently listed at $26,995 (dealer) and he will offer them 25k.

He's convinced that it is a good price, but i'm not so sure. I think its pretty expensive. The car has black leather and seems to be fully equipped.

It only has ~35,000kms on it, so that's the one major selling point he likes. He likes it because he can drive it and then sell it without much of a loss because of the low mileage.

Sound like a decent price?

I would say thats a good price at a dealership. Privately I would expect around 22-23 (would be really good IMO for that many km). But for a dealership, I have no problem with that price :) Tons of warranty left too!

edit- I also think that the km are more of a selling point than the year itself.

If it is a 2000, there is probably no warranty left.

It isn't a bad price. BMW 3 series cars hold their value very well.

for a dealership yeah thats not too bad, you can find them as low as 20 000 with decent kms

Did you check black book pricing yet?

no we do not have one

I checked it for you:

Low: $16,430.00 High: $18,550.00

Take this with a grain of salt though. This is what the dealer would give you on a trade-in. On most cars you will be paying higher prices than black book. Low mileage doesn't mean much in black books.

Go to Toyota.ca and go to the "Appriase your trade in" link. That's the Canadian blackbook website.

Thanks, sounds like the dealer would make a killing on this car...

Thanks for the link Richard. It's a Ci, so I got
Low: $18,230.00 High: $20,350.00 for it.

I guess it's just what the market dictates. It seems like a pretty good deal to me though... To put things in perspective, off the top of my head, the following cars with average km:

97 240sx ~ $5000
99 Prelude ~ $8000

Those are black book prices too. But you'll never see them sell for that much.

The numbers on that site are rarely anywhere near the "real" black book numbers. If they are close, it's usually more of a coincidence than anything.

As for the price of the car, I'd start by offering $23,000. Chances are you'll do better than $25k, but you can't do that if that's where you start!

Did 323's have leather as an option????

Seem's a tad pricey for a 5 (6) year old car...add tax onto that too...

It's the same site linked to by all auto makers. It's the same site that the saleperson at the dealership will punch numbers into when you bring a trade in. I doubt the numbers are very far off at all.

if he likes to drive, go for the 328ci with the sport package
the 323i is a "quick" car, but the extra umpfh you can get with the 328

I love my 323.. awesome car

Which furthers my point. If you believe the salesperson has anything to do with what the dealership gives you on a trade, then go ahead and feel confident in the numbers on the website.

If you know better, than you know the real numbers are in the used car manager's Black Book, that is rarely seen by others.

25k for one with so few Kms is a great deal.
You can't look at blackbook for BMW's, since the demand for them is very high, and they hold their value so well, blackbook really doesn't do them justice. Its not uncommon to pay up to 10K over blackbook on a BMW, where as with other cars you would look in the 3-4K range.

Well just an update for anyone who cares. He got it for 22,995 + taxes, just under 25 all inclusive. He started lower than he originally told me and the dealer was very responsive to the offer.
