My fiance is adopting a red ear slider turtle and needs a submergable water heater for it's tank, we have a basking light, we would like something to keep it's water heated though and they don't recommend using a hetaing pad because they are a fire hazard. Please let me know what you have.

you dont need a water heater for turtles if the tank is inside your house

Really? I was reading up on some care sheets and it says I should have a submergable heater. Do you think the basking light will be enough for it?I just don't want the thing to get too cold and maybe get sick.

ive had 2 turtles in a 140 gallon tank for the past 8 years with only basking lights and they have never had a problem ...lake water is much colder than room temperature water

Still looking for a heater, doesn't need to be very big, just enough to heat the water properly.

i've had 2 turtles before, red ear and painted. i'm also an ecologist at university. although they will survive without a heater, you shoud have one because they aren't able to thermoregulate very well in a tank with just a uv light.

i have some turtle stuff at home in minnesota, i'll be going back in december, let me know if you want to buy anything and i can check and bring it back. got a really nice water filter, etc. which is only like 2 months old. and other stuff like lights, books.

What kind of lights do you have and what make is the filter you have?

not exactly sure, been sitting in my parent's basement since 2000, i can check in mid-december. the filter is a canister filter, not sure on make/model, cost like $200 USD new. lights are prolly jsut cheap uvb-lights.
