I know this may be a long shot, but does anyone know of any Calgary Police Service people on this board?

Since this is in the careers section...do you need help with something with applying?

ryder and i are both interested in joining the CPS, we've both been on ride alongs, and we both know peeps in the CPS and the recruiting process.

Hell my bosses son just finished the recruiting process, so i heard all the stories, you have any questions?

Why did you quit

I quit because they started to pick my friends (who I could and could not associate with anymore), I'm not cool with that.....They're big on who you hang out with defines your character, which for me is untrue (obviously I've been functioning fine as a Paramedic for years....)....I may go again, but I'll go on my terms, plus its a big pay cut for me...

Now, I went through before you had to have the physical done before application.....I can tell you having it done before application saves alot of trouble!! Its a bitch, and I'd say there is a 50% failure rate on it alone....be prepared cardiovascularly, do lots of endurance running, its all anaerobic.....Next up get well with memory for the written...you have to do some recall testing, so when you're out and about practise remembering things about people you know, and see if you're right later in the day (what they were wearing, jewelry, etc. Even better, do it with people you don't know, but will run into later in the day (ie: people in other departments from where you work....).....

Keep your nose clean, once you get on its different, but for the time being, completely.....The recruiting guys have a fantastic way of making you feel guilty by talking about taking pens from work, and paperclips.....sounds minor right?? You're playing by their rules now, and they can make big shit out of small shit......The City has a way of establishing "control" over you, they did it to us Paramedics aswell with strict uniform guidlines as recruits, and asserting that you will do what they say (you have to go through it to know what I mean...)

Fill out your PDF (personal declaration form) as honestly as possible.....I spent over a week filling mine out, and they ask you questions you would not expect.....It sure makes you have a long hard look at your life, and what you could have been in trouble for.....Its also very nerve wracking, because you don't want to miss stuff they may ask you in the lie detector test...

The lie detector is gruelling.....I have friends who have lived straighter lives than most, and they were sweating bullets for 4 hours through this thing.....Brutality....

All in all, its difficult, but I think its a worthwhile career if you make it through.....They are looking for people, but they do not lower their standards!

Best way to check the process out is to goto a recruiting seminar, you should be able to sign up for one off the website....

Again, I'm no guru on the process, I've just posted my observations!

PARE test isnt tough, just exerting.

you should be able to complete it, i did when i only weighed 150 lbs. it took everything i had but i did it with 20 some odd seconds left (which isnt bad since you needa complete in 4 minutes)

now i weigh 190, more healthy, and im pretty sure i could do it with 30-40 seconds left. but yea like i said byt he end, it will hurt, everything will hurt heh.

and Turbo Medic is 100% right, the application is about 65 pages and you find stuff out about your life that you never even really realized. Also yea keep clean, i think you needa keep clean for 3 yrs straight minimum. it also appears 25 seems to be the golden age, but my bosses son got in at 24.

They look for maturity, so be respectable in the interviewing process, but dont act like you have a stick up your ass. be yourself, but still hold the "you could be my future employer, and i have no problem with calling you sir" attitude.

and yea i heard the polygraph test is BRUTAL. after the test they try and shake anything else outta you, apparently they come in the room, glare at you and just say "what arent you telling us?" even if you were honest.

and they also do a home visit hah. so a couple officers come to your house, see what your living style is like. meet roommates, parents, spouse, etc.

yep, even though it says 3 years, doesnt always mean its good enough.

A guy in my class went through the process just recently, and they asked him when he was seriously interested in becoming a police officer. They try to dig up, from the time you became serious about, you were clean. Whether its 3 years or more, since that date, you should pretend as if it was 3 years from that date. This probably isnt making sense so hereis an example.

ex: your 21, and are 100% sure CPS is what you wanna do with your life, but dont plan on applying till your 25. From the date you choose to become a cop, and say you go and smoke weed when your 21 1/2, but are clean for the rest. They dont care that you fit the 3 year minimum, the fact that you went out, knowing this is what you wanted to do, and still did this illegal act, will defintlly not look good upon you, and most likly will end in you being snipped from cps for a while or for good.

Polygraph is supposivly one of the, if not, most stressful part of the process. If your seriously interested, but dread that part, you could always look into RCMP. Last time i checked they have yet to implement the polygraph as manditory, but doubtful that will last long.

IMO they should just ditch polygraph test since its too much stress and like turbomedic said even 100% clean people sweat bullets on it. if a polygraph isnt valid in court, it shouldnt be valid for a job.

but thats just my views, i have nothing to hide, and i have a couple cops as references, and they think the polygraph is BS as well

Give me a rundown of the questions in the polygraph that are not on the form that you fill out?

Polygraph is not stressfull at all you simply tell the truth.

They tell you the ?'s before you are even hooked up to the machine. The total time is like 3 to 4 hours but on the machine is 10 min's. Dont worry about the poly until you get there as it is one of the end stages. The failure rate at the panel interview is quite high (50%) work on this area first only 1 in 4 make it to the poly.

dude polygraph is stressful for the same reason a job interview is stressful. your application could be 100% but the entire time you're thinking so hard about it your blood pressure raises as does your heart rate, thus, fucks you.

has really nothing to do with honesty. a person whos amazing at lying could pass a polygraph

They have all that information all ready so just sit back don't think and youre fine.

Also interested.

I know you guys can't tell us questions, because the RCMP let me know that everything I did during their process is classified.

I'm applying in the spring, when I have 2 years at Brink's under my belt.

holding your breath will temporarily lower your heart rate, but it will climb back up as soon as you start breathing again. But you can use those few seconds to clear your mind.

get a heart rate meter, and play around with it until you can consciouslly raise and lower your heart rate a few beats.

Also, taking an antidepressant will flat line your moods. But test this out in advance so you know what to expect.

Tyler883
11-28-2005, 10:28 PM
Also, starting with the base line questions: everytime you answer a question, say the exact oposite in your head. This helps establish a difernent base line to your baseline questions,

and it will also give you the edge that you will be less likely to get really nervous immediately after any honest question because you aren't worrying be called a liar, instead you are having some amusement about the opposite of your truth. Amuse yourself, don't stress out.

Don't over analyse their questions. Hence you wont be overly critical about the acuracy of your truth.

For example:

Q: have you ever smoked cigarettes?

A: No ( don't all of a sudden get worried about the 2 cigarettes that you had in high school, it'll just get you stressed out)

If you smoked two cigarettes in high school, and that's it, it'd be easier to say 'yes'... then clarify when they ask. I've been on polygraphs before... nerveracking.
