Would the hotel have a fair exchange rate? Would it be better doing some of the exchange before you left?

not much of a difference, i think we got a better rate down there for some reason.

Just bring US money. And the bank is going to be your best bet. You can maybe change it down there, but you'll usually get a better rate here, plus then you don't have to worry about it when you're on vacation.

where we went last time (playa del carmen), there was a scotiabank downtown which did incredible conversions for us. the hotel wasn't bad either, but see if you can find a known bank

There are currency exchange kiosks everywhere too. We found them to give a better rate than the hotel.

Use this and pick the cash rate to see what to expect.

umm most of mexico will take american/canadaiab currency neway with out exchange.... we paid american dollars for a couple of fiesta breakfast sandwiches, (mcmuffins) they had no problem taking our money, but if your own dollar is a peso i guess you wouldn;t have problem taking other currency

well, since the US dollar is worth so much more than peso you end up paying more if you use US $s. Thats why they try to insist on it.

Canadian 1 Dollar = $6.50peso at the hotel
American 1 Dollar = $9.60peso at the hotel

Canadian outside the hotel = 7 - 8peso
American outside the hotel = 10 - 11peso.. Usaully 10

Not all places accept Canadian tho...

Everyone exepts american money tho...
