Mazda CX-9: Mazda has already confirmed the CX-7, the production version of the MX-Crossport concept car, but it has another, larger crossover-style vehicle on the way as well. The CX-9 is Mazda's pitch at the R-Class sector and will replace the slow-selling MPV in the US as Mazda gives its range an image overhaul. No word as yet on whether it'll officially come to Europe and the UK. The CX-9 and CX-7 will also render the Tribute SUV redundant.

Seating: The CX-9 will have three rows of seats, accommodating up to seven. It is to be built, like the five-seat CX-7, on a lengthened version of the Mazda6 platform, which it will share with the upcoming Ford Edge and newly-launched Lincoln Aviator crossovers.

Engines: Like the Edge, it will be powered by the new Ford 3.5-litre V6 engine (250bhp and 240lb ft of torque), with a new six-speed automatic gearbox. No news of a diesel, but the platform and powertrain are said to be hybrid-compatible.

Unveiling: Mazda is expected to unveil the CX-9 at the New York Auto Show next spring, with sales following in late 2006 or early 2007. US-market versions may be built in Oakville, Ontario, alongside the Edge, though it will also be made in Japan - meaning that right-hand-drive versions will be produced.
