We did something like this when I was in either JH or HS.
The extra space comes in because you're cutting the squares across to make the triangles. The second image doesn't actually fit that well....
Did that explanation make sense? hahaha

That one's easy. The angles don't match up so you can't really just put them together like that. The lines used to intersect are thick enough to hide the additional area. that would be missing. Look carefully at the final diagonal line (where red and green touch). It's thicker in the middle. If you remove the lines used to draw it, it would actually be blank space there, accounting for the extra area.

Nice, but inaccurate.

When placed together, the angle of the 8X3 triangle ("small" pieces) used is 68.20 degrees, while the angle of the 5X2 triangle ("big" piece) is 20.56 degrees. when added together, they equal 88.76 degrees, not 90. Thus, there is a sliver of unused space between the two pieces that has a volume of 1. It doesn't show up in the picture because it is so long and thin. :D

If I remember correctly, calculat their angles and you'll find that A and C's angle isn't exactly the same which leave a gap and account for the extra square.

It's strickly optical illusion.

EDIT: BeBe, Rage and Bersek are all right and beat me to it.

Not only that, but when the two large triangles are moved to opposite corners of a 5x13 rectangle, there is a gap between their hypoteneuses of exactly 1/8 on the y-axis. It's the combination of the gap and the difference in angles that makes up the extra square.

So what happens if you put the triangles on a conveyer belt that moves backwards?

  VTEC engages and there's a shitstorm of takeoffs.

(My apologies to Ekliptix for blatantly stealing his post. But it was just too good to pass up! :D )
