I bought the weller battery powered soldering iron today for $20 from home depot. it works on the same principle as a normal iron, unlike the cold heat one that uses arcing electrodes on the end.
it runs off 3 AA batteries, and heats up to full temp in 15 seconds. this thing is awesome!!! just thought I would let everyone know. I was hesitant to buy it after getting that cold heat, which sucked giant rhinosarus ass. but this is well worth the $20 investment. heres a pic.

haha, I'm not that hardcore. but I can assure you as long as the job is just soldering circuit boards, or repairing jewelry, or general jobs this will be fine, its probably good for soldering wires for decks too.

Weller makes awesome soldering irons anyway so I would bet this is a good one as well.

I have heard of / been using Weller stuff for about 15 years or so.

My current iron is about 12 years old and stil works awesome.

How fast does it go through batteries? It takes a lot of current to produce the wattage to heat up the iron. I've always stayed away from battery powered irons for this reason.

It must be nice not to have any wires to deal with though. :)

the package says that it should solder 120 joints per set of batteries. but thats probably if you have everything in front of you and theres only 1 warm up. I made a vid of me soldering but its 26mb so I cant host it. sorry

I hope its not that "naked soldering vid" you keep raving about. I can only expect the worst from that one

 One must take precautions against the risk of static discharge!

word of advice dont use it to chip your ECU you will make a huge mess, you need a real soldering station, and a nice fine tip.
