Good idea, but this is episode was aired a while before the GT came out.
But, it's mathematics to the rescue! :D
The new GT has 550 HP and 500 lb-ft of torque, which is quite a bit more than the 1966 Mk2 GT40's numbers of 485HP and 475 lb-ft. However, the old GT40 weighed a mere 2306 lbs, compared to the GT's curb weight of 3390 lbs. (Perspective: The new Mazda MX-5 [ex-Miata] weighs in at 2470 lbs, 164 more than the GT40)
In a short race, the torque numbers are more important than the HP in determining the winner, so we use the above numbers to get the ft-lb/ton ratings of both cars. Higher is better:
2005 Ford GT - 294.98 lb-ft/ton
1966 Ford GT40 MK2 - 411.97 lb-ft/ton
Thus, the old GT40 would absolutely trounce the new GT - a fact that should come as no suprise, as the 7-liter engined GT40 was a LeMans race car with no creature comforts. It was a true race car!

i can't believe 300ZX TT actually won, I though 350z's suppose to run 14's ? And I know that 300ZX TT stock usually ran like mid to high 14....How the hell did it win??? Engine people must be hardcore drivers lol
But .. is it a stock 300TT ? hard to find a full stock one nowaday ...
but still, back then 300TT is 300HP and 300 ft/lb and did 0-60mph in 5.5-6.0 second .. from diff test ...
350Z does 5.8-6.0 second ..
well .. they are close anyway .. if stock to stock .. :D
I would love to see a 964 T vs a 997 ...
or a 993TT vs 997 S

Yeah, but one of them has less gears, remember? And old, old, old tires. And suspension. And BRAKES!:(

Yep, the GT40 is a 4-speed, which needs to make less shifts than the GT, which would be invaluable on such a short course as a 1/5 mile. The GT40's amazing power-to-weight ratio and low-end torque means it could take advantage of the longer first gear ratio. Anyone who owns a GT40 has fitted new radial tires, since any tire made in 1966 (I believe they had bias ply at the time) would be shot from age by now. The suspension would actually work in the GT40's favour, as it is stiffer than the suspension in the GT and therefore won't sap the torque on launch as much from squatting. And I'm pretty sure the brakes won't hurt the ET, either. ;)
