(BANG) - Tom Cruise has been voted the most irritating film star in the world.

The Hollywood heavyweight has been named the actor film fans find the most annoying in a new poll by British movie magazine Empire.

The star, whose fiancée Katie Holmes is pregnant, beat Jennifer Lopez, Julia Roberts, 'Happy Gilmore' star Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey to land the unwanted accolade.

However, Cruise was also named the biggest movie star of all time - proving that movie-goers are divided about the actor.

The 43-year-old star beat off competition from a host of screen legends, including Robert De Niro, Harrison Ford and Al Pacino, to claim the prestigious title.

More than 10,000 Empire readers took part in the online poll, which also asked fans to name their favourite actress and actor of the last 16 years, favourite film franchise and the star they would most like to see naked on-screen - won by 'Tomb Raider' beauty Angelina Jolie.

Ian Freer, Empire's assistant editor, believes Cruise was named most irritating actor of the last 16 years because of his peculiar antics in 2005, which include his now infamous couch jumping on Oprah Winfrey's show.

Freer said: "Voting Cruise the world's most irritating film star may be a knee-jerk reaction to the last year."
