View Full Version : New Car, Any Idea's?

Well, I'm looking to get a newer car before next winter. At the moment I drive a 1988 Oldsmobile Firenza. It sucks in the winter time, and it's slow. Not to mention it's old, and I can't do anymore than 25kms around any corner because of the stupid suspension. I only paid 900 bucks for it, and don't get me wrong; it's worth every dime for my first car but... I need something a little more sporty, something with some pep, something that doesn't feel like the car is going to flip when you go over 25 km around a corner. I was thinking a tsi awd Talon, however I still want something somewhat fuel efficiant. I want to look at more than one kind of car.

Any suggestions?

Don't forget maximum age or mileage.

Perferably domestic. Imports are too expensive to fix.
Any drive.
2 door, or 4 door.
Hatch or coupe, no "vert"
Sleeper.
Perferably a four banger.
Plan on modding it a touch.

I don't want anything "old" but I don't want anything too new.
I don't want anything that has over 120,000 kms.

Mustang, Camaro, Firebird, TransAm are what come to mind right away.

2 dr but 4 seats, not 4 bangers but u can get 6 or 8, 6s are good on gas, sleepers as they will still roast some cars out there, mod it the way you want it look or performance wise, less then 120,000km u could find, under $13g, coupe, rwd, cheap to fix, nothign to new.

I'll let u know if I think of naything else.

Mustang, I don't like ford. I don't really like TransAms, or
Firebirds. And as for Camaro, not my style. I was going
to go out on a limb and import a Stealth actually. But then
common sence kicked in an realized that it probably wasn't
a good idea. I need some more idea's. Something a little more...
Sporty, peppy... girly

btw, I don't have a problem with my car taking premium or
anything like that. Know why? Have you ever heard of a
1988 Oldsmobile that takes premium gas? Well, you have
now! I have to give my car premium because apperently
it's the "high output" engine. If I don't give it premium
it stutters and runs like crap. Also, I didn't give it an oil change
for 11,000 kms... I just didn't think it was that big of a deal for
that old of a car. I guess it is. I learned my lesson. :(

well since Ford is out of the question.
How about a Neon, Cavalier/Sunfire, Saturn Ion.

Don't rule out imports, sure they might be a bit more expensive to repair, but typically they don't need repairs as often. You could probably find honda and toyota parts pretty easily for cheap compared to other imports.

Why not a Civic? I mean there are LOTS of them but with a 13 grand budget you can buy a decent one and make it look "girly". Parts are generaly cheap and easy to find. LOTS of after market support. Fast 4 banger. I think a civic is what you are looking for.

Imports arent necessarily expensive to fix at all, and they are much less likely to break down than domestics.

Maybe try looking for a low mileage 94-01 Integra if you want something sporty. Could get a nice one for 10-13K...or anything Honda/Nissan/toyota etc.

imports and domestics cost about the same to fix.

Girly? Get a sunfire.

tsi_neal
12-31-2005, 03:35 AM
Sunfire, are your trying to make this poor girl hate cars?

Try a VW golf, spring for the GTI mid 90s will be a great price and a good one is plenty reliable and decent on fuel, also pretty quick too.

sabs, dont get a dsm, u`ll be hurting for cash, if u want something thats cheap, just buy an integra

Drsuce
12-31-2005, 09:58 AM
maybe a nice fiero? :P

in that range, for domestic theres not much thats "sporty" and get decent fuel econ.

you best bet would be a v6 mustang or camaro.... you could even get a nice convertable for that cash...

in 4 cyl it would be a focus, neon or cav/sunflower.

if you dont like em, get a civic or integra.

also keep in mind that *everything* is expencive to fix... labor is labor and thats what kills you (not parts)

btw, the stealth is an import. and from what i hear break down fairly offten and labor is HORRIBLE (much like a 300zx or subaru sti)

I keep telling her to stay away from DSM's, as my Talon was a piece of shit and she knew it. But hey... I'm just the BF, what do I know?

She wants something sporting and fun, right, so I keep suggesting a 180sx or an Integra or something.

I even suggested a Subaru 2.5RS.:burnout: :burnout:

I thought about sunfires, but they suck. Btw, the only
stickers I'll have on my car are the ones thats on there
now "autodream" And actually, 180 sx isn't such a bad
idea. But sunfires, come on.

maybe a 180sx? :dunno:

I'd keep it but it's just too old, too slow, and not my kind of car.
With the way that I drive, that car won't last too much longer.

Actually, I have a question. Okay so last night I was driving
to go get some food, and everytime I turn my turn signal on,
my windshield wipers come on too. But last night, they stayed on.
Then as I'm slowing down for a light, I take my foot off the gas
and the car gets what feels like a huge push from the back. I
even looked behind me to see if someone had pushed me but
the car just jolted by itself. Not to mention, it did this on more
than one occasion just in 25 minutes of driving...

What's going on?

gatta love the classic "old car" strange problems :(

my old mr2 would randomly shut off somtimes.... like running perfect then boom it just turns off, dosent stall or shutter... just turns off :P

^^ That's a bit odd hey. Well, I don't know what it is, but
I need to get another car soon, because I don't want to be
car-less!

Sounds like an old GM to me... Honestly ive spent far more money maintaining any domistic car ive owned than any import.

i really think it depends on the history of the vehicle too.

i've had my 96 gt for nearly 2 years, and have YET to replace a single part on it. obviously if you pickup an old fleet car, rental etc you can expect problems. i generaly find that when you purchase a vehicle from an "enthusiast" that they are better taken car of!

dont beileve in the "190km ALL HIGHWAY" or "lady driven", for example my roomate is female, and i sure wouldent buy her car. when i mentioned "oil change" she says "i thought i only have to add oil so it dosent run out?" with a confuzed look on her face.

ask the previous owner things like what kind of oil do you use? when was the last change? when was the last tire rotation, last air filter change, any work done on the vehicle, where they take it etc.

chances are if they say "recently" or anything other than a difinitive answer the car has not been maintained properly. if they say it has been serviced at a dealership ask for invoices. even if they didnt save them dealers can always print them off!

and never be afraid to walk away from a sale :) chances are there are hundreds of nearly identical cars out there :)

also dont be afraid to purchase outside of town, there is money to be saved!

That's quite the idea actually, and I like those cars.
And keeping in mind the max I want to spend is
between 10-13...

If I could get a good, sexy car for anything less.. I'd be happy
