Basically it is a series designation. Really, it goes something like:

First number = Series number
2nd and 3rd number = approximate motor displacement

i = fuel injected
ci = fuel injected coupe
d = diesel
td = turbo diesel
ti = touring injected (hatchback 3's)

In previous models, ci was "is" for injected sport.

You can check BMW World (http://www.bmwworld.com/models/cars.htm) for all the info.

what a question haha. Nicely answered.

Then you get into prefacelifted and facelifted and shite, gets confusing.

You missed something tho..

xi = four wheel drive, more specifically, awd.

so... 330xit is a awd touring 3. yay.

the m division is the car series top of the line with the motorsport division looking after it nicely.

a 320, 325, 330, m3 etc. m3 is more performance minded.

wouldnt say the numbers means they're better than ther one, for example.

a 325 and 330 could be identical, expect for the engine. :D

Also, iX is the AWD designation for the E30.

Also, on E36's

is = 2 door

i = 4 door or a 2-door convertible
