Say you connect your notebook to a wireless router thru Wi-Fi as well as a standard patch cable.

Does the system theoretically receive information faster than if connected via one of the two methods?

No.
You will only receive the information into one adapter at a time.

Thanks for your response. The odd thing is that I noticed that both the wireless and wired lights on the router blinks when I'm downloading something with both connections.

That is most likely a "status" light...
The card is still active, but the packets of information are being forwarded to the correct port/adapter.

Now I guess I could also add that you can use two adapters in the same system at the same time.. You can set some applications to use a certain network adapter as primary default... This mainly exists in corporate applications and server applications and nothing really for a regular consumer application.

I am pretty sure you are just doing regular computing so you wouldn't really need to look into this...

Maybe he wants to use his computer 'wired' then pick up his neighbour's wireless signal to get double the speed or something.
