Here’s my problem: I’m not sure what kind of rubber to get. I can use all the help I can get, so please post your replies. I’m thinking of buying new rims this year. Actually, I’m really keen on gunmetal MR7’ s. But I’m not that experienced on selecting the right rubber to mount on them. Should I get all-season because of the dramatic weather changes in Calgary or more performance ones? What kind of rubber do you guys have on your rims? Generally speaking what are the average costs for rubber alone on 16 and 17 inch wheels? Where can I get the best deal for rubber in Calgary?

Please note I’m not lazy to do research. But I don’t even know where to start. Also, keep in mind that I will only use this rubber in Spring and Summer times. This is because I have winter tires for the rest of the year.

Thanks.

Kaltire quoted me $592 everything included for a set of 205/60/14 Yokohama AVS ES100s last week. I'm sure if you went for a set of 16" or 17", it wouldn't be much more than some $200 extra. Also, they told me they don't sell 712s or Azenis.

Those are basically the three tires everyone seems to like as a summer-only tire. Check out www.tirerack.com for some reviews.

I wouldn't recommend going for summer only tires if you're not going to drive very hard (AutoX etc), as they'll only be a waste of money.

GO to www.tirerack.com and see what they have. They do not have all tires, bit a large selection with user reviews.

Kumho 712's are ok if you want ok traction and longevity.

I have Yoko Parada Spec 2's and they are pretty good. Pretty good traction (wet and dry) and good wear.

You have a teg right? If so, I might be selling my Racing Hart S7's which look very similar to the Motegi's but are about 10lbs lighter each. PM me if you are interested.

In Calgary, All seasons are inadequate at best during the winter so it makes sense to have winter tires for the winter, and summer tires for the summer. The extra price you pay in the cost of tires far outweighs the price of sliding into someone elses car or something. In cities such as Vancouver however, all season tires would be a good idea if you don't ever plan on tracking the car since winter tires aren't really necessary.

Yeah, that's true, I haven't thought for long before posting that statement :)

lol it's unlikely you'll ever find anyone to agree on a tire for your application. My choice: Michellin Pilot HX.

I've had the following tires...

Falken Ziex
BF Goodrich G-force T/A
Bridgestone Potenza
Dunlop Sport 8000
Goodyear eagles

Out of all the above, the only ones I will buy again are the falkens, or the dunlops. The dunlops are better tires, but the falkens are the best bang for my buck.

For my next set I will buy:
Kumho Ecsta's, or Yokohama AVS sports, or another set of Dunlops.

I've got the Dunlop FM901's (205 40 R17) they are one good handling tire! They grip real good. I can take this one corner near my house at about 10 km/hr faster on entry speed and hold it through out the turn before the tires squeal. You can get them for a pretty good price usually too!
