Phaneuf to undergo knee surgery!!!

OTTAWA (CP) -- Cynthia Phaneuf of Contrecoeur, Que., has withdrawn from next week's Canadian championships and will miss the chance to qualify for the 2006 Olympics because of a right knee injury, Skate Canada said Tuesday.

The 17-year-old, the defending Canadian women's silver medallist and the Canadian women's champion in 2004, has been skating recently but cannot jump because the injury is to her landing knee.

Earlier this season Phaneuf was forced to withdraw from the Skate Canada International and the 2005 Cup of China because of a minor stress fracture in her ankle.

She did not compete this season.

Phaneuf says she is planning to compete next season once her injury is fully healed.

"I'm very disappointed," she said in a statement. "But I want to be back next year and I want to be ready for the ISU Grand Prix circuit."

The Canadian championships run Jan. 9-15 in Ottawa.
