ahh Benetton days....

Some days you get the bear.... and some days the bear gets you.

Seems F1 is trying to get better exposure in North America right now and this does not help at all. Both Schuey doing something that definitely appeared to be a bit shady and then F1 having to send the best competition for Alonso and Renault all the way to the back. Too bad, close competition makes for a good race. Mclaren are "almost" there. Webber/Williams appeared to be pretty racey, especially towards the end. Do you think Alonso was holding up Kimi and that allowed Webber to almost catch up?

Michellin brought in a safer-spec tire for Indy to avoid last year's non-start. This is the reason for the large gap between Bridgestone and Michellin runners. Looks like it'll be a Ferrari show tomorrow morning :(.

well, I am not sure no one wants him to be in F1 next year. In fact, he said he had a couple of options in F1 for next year, but decided F1 is not fun for him anymore.

Although he seem to whine a lot and blame others for his mistakes recently, it would be sad to see him go... whether you like it or not, he is more of a character than most of the drivers in F1. We need more characters like Montoya, JV in F1 (and fewer of Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Webber, Button, Klein, etc). He is a proven race winner and has the driving skill to become a champion. Unfortunatly, his expectations were never realized in F1.

BMW to run radical wings at Magny-Cours

The BMW-Sauber team will run their radical vertical wings this weekend at the French Grand Prix F1Racing.net can reveal. The wings were introduced last week on Wednesday when Robert Kubica and Jacques Villeneuve were testing the new wings.

ya, I heard they are running these wings this weekend. I wonder how much of a difference they make? Kubica in testing said that he didn't feel much difference.... so don't know if he was telling the truth or not. Probably not, because why would you put something on the car that is ahead of the driver's sightline if it doesn't make a difference to aerodynamics.

habsfan
07-13-2006, 10:41 AM
i guess the FIA wants to cut costs even more. from next season onward they've decided to ban third cars on the race weekends, so i guess that only leaves testing sessions for the third drivers now. and effective immediately saturday qualifying final session has been shortened from 20 minutes to 15.

http://www.f1racing.net/en/news.php?newsID=124015

cloud7
07-14-2006, 03:09 PM
I think it is good that they are banning the 3rd car... it really serves no purpose for the 3rd driver to do most of the driving on Friday.... as JV said earlier in the season, people pay to see race drivers, not some unknown test drivers. In addition, I think it is unfair to the other teams who can't run a 3rd driver.

Cutting the last 5 min of the last Quali session is good too. It really gets boring when they just circulate single file (at less than full speeds) to burn fuel until the last 7 min of the session. It just put extra miles on the engines.

iceburns288
07-15-2006, 01:55 PM
The third cars were the only ways for good drivers to get into the sport. Now the only way to get into F1 is buying your way in, which is what they're starting to do anyways:thumbsdow

that was a big shunt... not surprised he was hurt... the car hit the barrier at an awkward angle and didn't bounce off much for the speed he hit the wall... I am sure he will be fine for the race after Hungary with the 3-week summer break.

Keep dreaming. MS was running those times in Q1 and Q2, which means he was on next to no fuel. Alonso pretty much ran out of fuel at the end of Q2 knockout.

what an amazing race. A few thoughts...

What an amazing fight Alonso vs Schumacher at the beginning. Wow. Just speechless. I have new found respect for Alonso in the rain. I haven't seen mad skills like that since Senna. I was just blown away. Can't wait till he's at McLaren next year.

Poor Alonso... owned by a nut. I hope that guy gets fired.

Damn backmarkers, took out Kimi who definately could've won today! Still dunno who's fault it is tho...

WTF is wrong with MS? Goes off, shortcuts, and refuse to give up his position to De La Rosa. Then when he looks to give up the spot, he "schumacher chops" de la rosa. Good to see MS's car break, fucking karma. If he didn't break, he would've been black flagged for that stupid move (in which he'll probably serve last lap like before).

I loved what De La Rosa said on the team radio talking about the fight with MS. "Don't worry in the pitlane guys, I know what I'm doing". haha fucking quote of the race! Go underdog!

Doesn't the race end after 2 hours? I thought that was the time limit in the rulebooks. They just kept going today till all the laps were gone.

Button finally won lol.

What an awesome F1 weekend. Rain is fun... makes things totally unpredictable!

Some corrections after rewatching the race on the euro feed.

- Alonso's driveshaft broke. Not pit crew's fault.

- MS should be banned from racing. He basically disregards all rules, and the reason why his car broke was he was blocking Heidfeld, who's 4s a lap faster, and smashed into him. What a moron. Blocks alonso like crazy at the beginning (props to Alonso for passing in the wet on the OUTSIDE). Blocks button. Blocks De La Rosa, and ignores the shortcut/must let guy pass rule. Blocks and chops Heidfeld which breaks his own car. Schumacher Chops all 4 drivers he fought with.

Why the fuck is he still in F1? Especially after Monaco's parking job... jesus christ. I hope the stewarts penalize MS for his fucking retarded antics in the rain today. Totally uncalled for dangerous driving.

what a race...makes a strong argument for a small hard spec tire. F1 is a manufacturers race and I am rethinking the place of a tire war in the mix.

That must be a record for number of Schumaker chops in a race ...maybe even a season. MS should have his license yanked or maybe he was ill and they found that Yuji Ide fit in his suit. Let's hope for some post race investigation and penalties.

Props to Button....long overdue

Kimi's statement.

Kimi Raikkonen
"I could do nothing to avoid the collision with Liuzzi. He really slowed down on the racing line and there was just nowhere for me to go except into the back of him. The start of the race was really good for me with my first set of Michelin tyres working really well, bu t after the first stop I was really struggling with grip on the front, and as a result Fernando Alonso was able to build on his lead. It is never great to end a race like that especially when there was every opportunity to win it, but we just have to move forward, and I really appreciate the gesture of Liuzzi coming to apologise. Well done Pedro for a strong performance."

Rory Byrne extends contract to 2009.

If you dunno who Rory Byrne is, he's the chief designer responsible for Schumacher's dominance at both Benneton (B194, B195) and Ferrari (F2000 to F2005).

Byrne to stay at Ferrari until 2009
Ferrari aiming for some technical stability

Design consultant Rory Byrne has signed a new two-year contract to extend his stay at Ferrari until early 2009, according to reports.

Earlier this month, the Sunday Times newspaper tipped the South African - the former chief designer of Michael Schumacher's title winning cars - to finally 'retire to Thailand' at the end of 2006.

But the website of British magazine Autosport now says the 62-year-old is set to stay on, even though the Maranello based team is losing Michael Schumacher and probably Technical Director Ross Brawn.

Team boss Jean Todt, meanwhile, is thought likely to retire after 2007.

Designers Aldo Costa and Nicholas Tombazis, however, are staying put to comprise a strong line-up for 2007, and Brawn is tipped to return in 2008 following a short sabbatical.

Ferrari will not confirm the structure of the team for 2007 and beyond until the end of the season.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo told reporters at Monza: "We want to maintain an important stability with some new entrants."

Hard to say... Aldo Costa has been working close with Byrne for like 10 years now and he's stepped up in the head designer role. I don't think it'll have as much of an impact as you think.

Remember, the Ferrari's probably the top car of the field this year, and it's the bridgestone tires that's causing them to slip up. Their powerplant is by far the strongest of the field as seen by their trap speeds at every race. With the engine freeze happening pretty much after China, and single tire manufacturer next year, it's a safe bet that Kimi and Ferrari are gonna have a good few years.

Any F1 conspiracy theorists want to bring up engine freeze for 2007 vs Ferrari powerplant power? :D

Former racer reveals dirty Ferrari trick
Fontana recalls Todt's blocking command

The conclusion of the 1997 title fight at Jerez

Nine years after the fact, former Sauber racer Norberto Fontana has threatened to deepen the saga of F1's championship finale of 1997.

Fontana, who at the age of 22 was replacing team regular Gianni Morbidelli and never again raced in Formula One, told a newspaper in his native Argentina that he was instructed before the race to deliberately block Michael Schumacher's title rival, Jacques Villeneuve.

"And I did it," Fontana, now 31, told Diario Ole.

In 1997, Sauber was powered by customer Ferrari engines. Fontana explained that, prior to the green lights in Jerez, he was visited in his motor home by Ferrari boss Jean Todt.

"It was two or three hours beforehand," he said. "Jean Todt came in and said that we must block Villeneuve if he comes up behind me. 'It was a strict order."

"To this day I regret what I did."

Indeed, after pulling over for Schumacher whilst being lapped, video evidence shows Fontana impeding Williams' Villeneuve for three or four corners.

Later, Schumacher collided infamously with his French Canadian rival and was disqualified from the championship.

But during the race, F1 commentator Murray Walker suggested that Ferrari should send Fontana a 'case of champagne' for so assisting Schumacher's quest.

Fontana said: "Schumacher and Todt never thanked me, because they lost."

they changed Alonso's front tires at the first pit stop, which wasn't a good thing to do (unless they had a real problem with the tires) because the inters get quicker as the tread wears off. Second mistake was that the right rear (I think it was the right rear) wheel nut wasn't sitted properly and they cross-threaded the nut at the first attempt... they had to redo it which cost Alonso's pit stop to be something like 20 seconds instead of the 7 seconds that it should have been...

Renault has got to stop making mistakes... I believe Alonso will win the driver's championship if the team don't make any more mistakes... otherwise, Schumi will get another title.

bmeier
10-02-2006, 12:05 PM
the 20 second pit was after the fact though, Schumi had already passed him by that point. It was a major fuckup on renaults part but i dont think it really harmed alonso that much, schumacher was already ahead at the time.

it was funny to see fisichella come out of the pit and try to hold off schumacher on cold slicks, he didnt even make it past the first turn....

also alonso's tires were in pretty bad shape which is why they changed them. He has so much turn in that it just eats his tire up.

Interesting to see the first batch of drivers who put on their slicks, it was drift city out on the track. Im glad MS won, I cant stand Alonso, bitch didnt even shake MS's hand at the end of the race. Looking forward to this weekend GP in Japan.

I feel sorry for Kubica he had a good strategy and was moving up nicely, just put the slicks on a little early. Then Heidfeld punted on the last corner... BMW must have been aggrivated with their luck.

i thought this was a rather exciting race, lots of race passing rather than pit passing =)

and I agree with Redlyne, I hate Alonso, go shcumi.

yes, you're right it was at the 2nd pit stop where they fucked up the left rear... with the margin of victory just over 3 seconds, though, the >10 second mistake was huge.

Kubica is awesome! He worked so hard to take back the places he lost at the start. BMW are coming up fast.

Great race. Even though I am Italian I have never warmed to Ferrari + Schumi. I liked them better when they were the under-dogs (Prost, Mansell, Alboreto, Berger). Plus I dug Benetton and Flavio is still cool. He ran the Lancia rally program that dominated rally in the late 80's early 90's alongside Toyota.

I do like Kimi though and he will be fun to watch in a Ferrari.

Kubica has the speed but needs a lot more experience... it was bad that he got tangled in a first corner incident with Doornbos... it was his and the team's inpatience/inexperience to switch to dry tires when they did... it was nowhere near dry enough for dry tires. A rookie mistake. The car was good enough to score some good points.

It is amazing how people think he is the next great driver in F1 with only one good race (out of the 4 that he competed). I prefer to wait and see how he develops into a driver... and how consistent he can be throughout a full F1 season.

Who said he would be the next great? Not me. I think he is exciting to watch and amazing for a 21 year old. He might not be another Alonso or Kimi - but then again he might.

I am saying this as a Jacques fan so I would be justified in not liking him after Thiesen gave my man the boot.

The margin of victory was only like that because schumi slowed down intentionally to save his motor. Alonso was going all out and he couldnt make the time up.

Trust me if the race was closer schumi would have been pushing alot harder...

IMO it didnt make a difference in the race schumi is notoriously hard to pass and he had built at 24 second lead on alonso with the bad pit stop. If you take 10 seconds or so off the lead to account for the pit stop i honestly dont think alonso could have made up the time anyways.

Boy Alonso sure made quick work of Fisi.

Renault team orders are OK I guess. Nobody seems to want to talk about that. When Ferrari does that stuff all the haters come out of the wood work.

I don't know why people have a problem with that in a single team.

:werd: :werd: it's a problem when ferrari does it and they should all be hung and burnt to a crisp, but when it's blatant that fisi was ordered to let alonso pass, nobody says anything about it at all.
