hey all,

ive decided to finally bite the bullet and start ripping my cd collection.

my question is, i plan on doing this only once, and i have heard that ripping them to flac is a good start.

other than that, what are your recommendations for programs that will do it quickly, and what bit rate would you recommend? i was thinking 160.

i have some hd space, but not a ton to go all out 320 or anything. dont have that kind of time either...

Anything after 128 you're probably not going to be able to notice a difference with your ears.

Use windows media player?
and 192 is usually a good bitrate to work with, CD Quality.

What sort of speakers do you have? That'll determine how high you should rip.

Actually, CD quality would be uncompressed PCM 44.1Khz, 16 bit.

well, i plan on using the mps3s all over, in my ipod, in my car stereo, on the computer, etc...

i just thought 160 was a good comprpmise between size of file and sound quality

I rip everything at 192, never noticed too much of a difference.
What program should one use to rip CDs, I know Windows Media player isn't the best, and I'm not sure ITunes isn't much better

I wouldn't rip any lower than 192.

rip it at 192 and I use this program.

http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/

it has great abilities for naming and foldering your different music.

The best part is that its free!!!!

FLAC is good, but the file sizes are insane. As in 1 CD = 1 GB or so. :nut:

192+ MP3 should work just fine.

Anyone use Exact Audio Copy and lame Variable Bit Rate codec? It should produce files around the 200kbps mark, depending on the complexity of the song, and should sound better "as good" as CD quality. Drawback with VBR is that file sizes are not predictable because the bit rate varies from one song to another.
