So I need a nice big car to haul customers around in.

I was thinking on an 01-02 Jaguar XJR.

Its big, luxurious and fast!! This would be my daily driver in Houston. I will still have the FD for fun too.

My boss basically said that the Evo MR is too boy racer and gives the wrong impression to my clients right now :( Oh well I do get an "Allowance" to remedy the situation.

I like the E39 M5's. I remember a test done by one of those tv shows on the XJR and they weren't too impressed for the price of one.

Ya but used they are a smokin deal.

I really like the E39 M5 too, but to be honest they are more expensive.

Performance is really secondary as I plan on having a 400-450 whp FD in the near future.

So looks and style are what I amlooking for with a little grunt to keep me entertained.

It seems that Top Gear Really liked the car.

They are good .. for the price point!

~ 2000 XJR .. probaby can get one under $30K ??

Of course, E39 M5 is way nicer car ... but .. same 2000-2001 .. still running in $55-60K ..

For E46 328 price, you can get a XJR ..

I don't mind to get an XJR as well ..

Top Gear has a huge bias for British Cars, not surprising they liked the Jag.

XJR's are seriously one of the best value-for-money out there. I plan to buy one as soon as I can affort it! 390HP, suave interior, the works! I had the chance to drive one in England, and I fell completely in love with the big Jag. You can drive for a million miles in it and not be uncomfortable in the least. It's comfy, spacious, and fast. The supercharged V8 and aluminum construction mean 0-60 in around 5 seconds - that's sportscar speed in a big, well-appointed Jaguar. How can you not love the XJR?

beautifil exterior,, the interior looks very ford

The '99 I was in didn't feel Ford at all. The wood grain was quite nice, the materials were high-quality, fit and finish was also quite good. I'm not sure how you figure it's "Ford-ish." My only complaint is that the console on North American models has silly buttons, while European ones get a nice touch-screen navi system.

I owned a 1995 XJR. Excellent vehicle. Lots of power. The only real thing I didnt like with it was the injector system with the hoses being on a vertical. If one of the hoses come loose then its straight to the shop you go...the car will be operable but with no brakes and no power...real tough to get around like that. I had that happen to me on Macleod Trail by Chinook...embarrassing moment to say the least.Absolutely beautiful vehicles though. If you decide to get a mid 90s try to get the one with REAR heated seats and the proper XJR badging on the middle console.
Also...windshilelds are not cheap.

Other vehicles to look at in the same class s420, 740iL

my 2 cents thats all.

Remember that the 1995 XJR had the supercharged 6-cyl. (322HP) engine as opposed to the supercharged V8 (370/390) of 1996 onwards. The V8 probably doesn't have the same injector hoses, and is considered to be very reliable.

lol they have no resale value...i saw a 01 or 02 with under 50K for somewhere areound $35K....for that price who can say no to 370 hp S/C V8....I mean ideally I would prefer an M5 but it just depends on how much you wanna spend.

I would agree about the V8 comment so a certain point. See...the guy that traded in the 95 bought a V8 instead. I would prefer the supercharged V6 personally...better reviews in general...and I believe in 96 is when they started switching to other parts..

I could be wrong though.

www.jag-lovers.com is a great website for jag enthusiasts.

If you need to haul clients around, you might want to consider something else. The rear seats of the XJR aren't overly spacious.

If you do like the Jag still, look at the Vanden Plas... much more room and it still has the "base" 290 hp V8... enough for a daily people-hauler.

BerserkerCatSplat

The Vanden Plas is a very spacious option, but remember that you're not limited to the base V8 - the Vanden Plas Super V8 option retains the supercharger in the VP body, although they are somewhat rare.

Regular XJR rear seats aren't that bed, though. It's no limo, but it's not the unuseable rear seats that XKR has, either. I suggest going out and comparing the rear seats on the XJR and XJ Vanden Plas Super V8 and deciding whether the price difference is worth it.

But because of their rarity and higher initial price, the VDP SC is not in the same price range as an XJR, that's why I left it out.

Edit: Although, if the buyer is in the US, prices there are much closer... go for the VDP SC!

I would love a VDP SC but they are really hard to find!

Damned near impossible, really! There's only one VP on Ebay right now, item # 4604403397. Too bad it's only got a base V8, but $15,000 isn't bad for a '99 either way!

If you're suggesting an 8-series, you seriously don't get the point of what he's buying. He's shuttling around clients and needs to make a good impression - and it's tough to make a good impression on someone while you're cramming them into the tiny back seats of a 2-door 8 series.

Personally, I hate Jags. I find them ugly, the interiors are nothing special and not very ergonomic and they are expensive to repair/maintain. For the price of a XJR, I would try and find a 2000-ish S430

lexus isn't in the same class as most german luxo barges

he needs something to haul customers around in and the 850 is a 2+2. not very good for that.

Last I checked, Jag was ranked higher than Mercedes and BMW in terms of reliablility by such independent testers as J.D. Power. Jags used to be unreliable, but they got a lot better after Ford bought them and told them to stop making V12's.

actually, once they started talking about the BMW's, then its fair to throw in Lexus. because they do compare quite substantially.

I love the looks of the XJR, and I think the interior is second to none (but that is personal preference).

I do like the S-Type too, but its a bit smaller and doesn't have the same presence.

I think the s-class is a lot more expensive though.

Oh and I am a petroleum engineer.
