You can cancel your registration without losing your plate entirely; it just becomes an unregistered license plate. When you get your new car, then you can re-register it.

If the person you sold the car to registers your old car in their name, it should automatically remove the vehicle from your registration information.

If you go into a registry office, they should be able to take care of it for you.

However if you end up with an extra plate, and it has time left on it, go to the registry and sign-off on it. I believe they refund you for the unused portion of your registration.

If it's only a week, the best thing to do, is to go in, and renew your plate. When you renew, you are allowed to change information. So, just leave it until your new car gets here, then go in, renew the plate and change the information. This saves you the $21 fee for transferring the plate.

I am in a similar situation yet different.
I am selling my car to a friend but he wants
to keep my plate.
There is 1 year left on the plate.
Is there anyway to change the owner of the plate?

Thanks

Nope, plate belongs to the owner for life. (Unless it is surrendered, then issued to somebody else, but you don't get control over who it is issued to)

It's about 200+/- for a custom plate.

Yup, $200-ish (+/- $20) for a pair of custom plates. Plus a 4 week wait I was told.
