Go for the Cherokee. Great vehicles overall only thing to watch out for is the alternate engines(4cyl in those years)
Go with a 4.0L and automatic transmission and it will do well over 300,000km's. If its strictly for onroad use then go for a NP242 transfer case(2wd,4 part time,4 fulltime and 4low)
Have you considered a Grand cherokee? That would be a viable suv for onroad(not bad offroad either) and its full time 4wd as well. Problems with the 4.0 are few but there are some isues with the rear main seal leaking. as far as overall problems go there aren't many except rust and the earlier transmissions(peugeot:barf: ) You wont have many issues with them so long as you keep it on road but go offroad and well then you start wanting a lift, bigger tires and yeah....
If you'd like more info PM me

GO FOR THE JEEP.

I"ve owned several Jeep 4.0L and have been pleased with them all. The oldest is a 1989 Jeep Commanche pickup and it's running strong at 370,000km. It runs great, starts in the dead of winter, and I've hardly put any money into it.

The 4.0L has been proven for almost 2 decades, if not longer. It's a solid engine. I'd stay away from the Rangers.

Got tough truck for off road. The 4.0L HO is a nice truck motor - lots of power. Bloody aweful for a commuter vehicle. I used to have a 98.

Get the Cherokee. My wife loves driving mine. The 4 liter engine and auto trans are bullet proof.

i have 3 jeeps between 88 and 95 and they are by far the best choice of the 2.. easier to fix, durable and the 4L motor is built like a tank.. go with the xj or zj!

I'd go for the Grand Cherokee for her as well. More creature comforts and options than the Cherokee.

I have a 98 GC Ltd 5.9 litre. It's been a good reliable vehicle.

Great in the snow, comfortable on the highway, holds my 2 dogs and 2 kids and gear with roof rack for trips.

and there's lots of used ones on the market everywhere!!!

My wife used to own a Ranger. It was such a piece of junk that she said she will never own a Ford again.

When I had another job last summer, they had a Ford Ranger that took road trips for anything the company needed, it burnt more oil then any other vehicle I have seen.
On the other hand my sis has a '96 Jeep Cheroke Grand something or other and its bulletproof. My advice would be definatly go for the Jeep.
