Just wanted some feeback on where people have gone surfing and body boarding. I should be getting my board back from Australia in the next 6 months, and would love to plan a surf trip next winter.

I am looking at going somewhere reasonably close (Costa Rica or somewhere near Caribbean) and have been surfing in Western and Eastern Australia.

Eventually I would like to go to Bali and back to Australia, but for now I am trying to keep it to this side of the world.

I found some top 10 lists on the net that I thought I would share:

10. Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain
9. Kandahar Beach, Mexico
8. Huntington Beach, U.S.A.
7. Isla Ensenada, Panama
6. Surfers Paradise Beach, Gold Coast, Australia
5. Tamarindo, Costa Rica
4. Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa
3. Buzios, Brazil
2. Papara Beach, Tahiti
1. Waikiki, Hawaii

10. ULUWATU - BALI, INDONESIA
9. THURSO - SCOTLAND
8. SUNSET BEACH - USA
7. SOUTH PACIFIC
6. PUERTO CHICAMA - PERU
5. MUNDAKA - SPAIN
4. KIRRA - AUSTRALIA
3. JEFFREY'S BAY - SOUTH AFRICA
2. HOSSEGOR - COTE D'ARGENT, FRANCE
1. CANARY ISLANDS - SPAIN

For me the best 5 places I have been:

5. Margaret River - Australia
4. Seal Rocks - Australia
3. Noosa - Australia
2. Surfer's Paradise - Australia
1. Byron Bay - Australia

So far I am thinking about Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, Brazil, or somewhere in the South Pacific.

Cant believe you liked Byron Bay the best, they had the main beach where you could surf the shipwreck, but the waves were so small and the point below the lighthouse or whatever that was but the waves seemed so choppy all the time

Maybe the waves were just bad when I was there, but that town was awesome

For sure Australia, wicked waves, awesome climate and cheap. Hawaii is for tourists unless youre a kick ass surfer and know where to find the local hideouts. So Cal has its good days and Oregon is totally underated but awesome. Tofino is ok but always cold as hell and the wave conditions are hit and miss.

The first day I went to the beach with my board in Byron Bay, the locals said the waves were the best they had been in a long time. They stayed huge the whole week I was there, it wasn't the best location that I visited, but best waves for sure.
