If so, can you explain this one to me?

I was checking out the Boxster option list, if you buy the following separately:

Bi-Xenon Headlamps
Self Dimming Mirrors
Heated Seats
Floor Mats
Wheel Caps
Bose System

It totals $5220.

If you were to buy them in a package 'Preferred Package Plus', it totals $6990. Now usually there is a significant discount for buying options in a package, but this doesn't make sense for the Boxster.

Now the Cayman S 'Preferred Package Plus' is $6990 as well, it includes all of the above plus Powered Seats and a Remote CD Changer ($3080 option) so if you bought all of the above separately for the Cayman it totals $8300 so that's a $1310 discount for the Cayman S options.

:dunno:

Those options should cost more then $5000...

Bi-Xenon is app. $1500 .. Bose sound is app. $2300 as well and the auto dim is $1000 already .... heat seats is app.$700 .. Mats app. $300 .. and Caps should be another $300 ..

So .. total up app. $6K .. and the package is $5400 .. so .. u save app. 10% .. which is reasonable. :)

I guess you mixed up the package+triptronic .. and the package plus ..

Anyway ... a fair Boxster should runs you app. $75K-80K .. and Boxster S should be app. $85K-90K ...

What a bargain, consider it is app. half the price of it's big brother!

Total is $5220. No discount but why pay $1770 more? :dunno:

I think Porsche is counting on its customer not caring about nickels and dimes.

$1770 isnt exactly nickle and dimes, especially on a boxster...

Not being foolish but I always thought Porsche owners shit bricks of gold and $1770 isn't an object. :D

And the configuratons are so confusing that I bet most don't find out that they are getting ripped off.

Shit bricks of gold? Damn, that's why it was yellow... all those damn gold bricks I flushed down the toilet....

Seriously though, perhaps there is something else in the package that isn't mentioned?...
It is unusual that they would make an oversight like that. However, if you bring it to their attention, they might raise the price of everything else to make the package a good deal ;)

I find that the price that is on the website is never close to what you actually pay for the car.

I would suggest going down to the dealer to get the real deal.

I've had several new(er) Porsches lately and the way the options are priced/offered, it piles up very quickly!

It's funny, all other companies are trying to offer more for less and here's Porsche not even offering power seats on a 130k Carrera S!

What options did your Carerra 4 come with? I'm curious about the Sport Seats and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).

also the BOSE audio is listed as $2330, not $1330 that you used for your calculation.

Max, my C4 is very bare bones except for bi-xenon, heated seats, and the 19" 4S wheels. I didn't really like sports seats for everyday driving, they weren't very comfortable and the bolsters would get beat to crap getting in and out all the time....

As for the PASM, I didn't NEED it and it wasn't on the car...no brainer for me. It's a nice feature for what it is though...

Ok I think I might have figured out why.

For the regular Boxster, you get that pricing, for the Boxster S (which is what I was looking at), the preferred package plus is exactly the same but for whatever reason is priced at $6990. Anyway, no big deal.

Thanks for helping though :D

Why not buy used? Porsche's depreciate quite quickly and a lot of them are well taken care of. The Cayman S/997s are nice cars.. first tempting Porsches since the Carrera GT.

Yeah. Why buy a lady porsche when you can get a well taken care of used one. (911 TT??)

I think you might be pushing the limit a little there... Talking about an 06 Boxster ----> 996TT. Even with a loaded Boxster, the first 996TT you'd want to touch is $25k away.

If you are considering a new Boxster, I would say look at a pre-owned 996 instead. The newer the Porsche, the heavier feeling; getting away from sports cars and more into GT cars. Sad kinda...

It's also hardly the sports car it once was.

Relative to each model before it, yes it is. Drive a 997 back to back with any 996, 993 (my fav!), 964... etc and the car gets "softer" each step of the way. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the 997. The 3.8 gives more "push-your-ass-into-the-seat" feel this side of a 996 GT3, but it's getting bigger, heavier and more comfortable.

Back on topic...

If you want a 987 Boxster, try and find a pre-owned 05. It'll save you some money, and to be honest, most people get carried away ordering options and the car gets waaaay too pricey.

If you are hung up on getting a new car, there are still some new ones in inventories, or a lotto winner's with 300km...

Yeah, Boxster => 996TT is waayyyy too big a gap. My dad wanted to flip his 996 Cab for a TT but even that was too much. He doesn't like paying lots for Porsches, lol. When I told him (about 5 years ago) about the prototype CGT going to be put in production and I told him it would be 400k+, he said "That much for a Porsche?!":D

The Carrera GT is actually a great deal, but you're right about the name limiting it. Short of a Ferrari Enzo, nothing really touches it.

6 year BUMP!

Anyone buy a Porsche recently? How have those 997's held up? I'm looking to spend around $50-$60K. I'm going to HELOC it (in case you might ask) since I don't have cash just sitting around.

This will be my first Porsche, I know nothing about them. I don't want a Boxster or Cayman. I want a 911! I know with Porsche's you can add $50K in interior options, I don't care if it has full seat memory, powered seats, the most luxurious two tone leather interior, shift knobs, special steering wheel etc. haha I think you get my point so buying a used one with less interior refinements is for me.

When I think Euro cars, I think electrical problems i.e. my driver side unlock button no longer works on my 2 year old GTI. What am I looking at to own a a Porsche? In terms of maintenance and replacement parts? My NSX full maintenance was $2k, timing belt, new battery, new oil, all fluids flushed. $50 Honda oil changes FTW!. I probably won't get that kind of value but just saying.

So is this how it works?

C2 = RWD right?
C4= AWD right?
C4S= AWD+some bumpers from the Turbo

Realistically I'm thinking C2 although C4 would be good for winter or I can just buy a $5000 Impreza winter beater for the terrible days.

I'll sell my GTI and Tribeca if I do this. My NSX is gone. I'm post 30 now and I think it's time I own a Porsche.

THANKS for any relevant useful info.

Looking at Porsche website, new is just ridiculous. Not winning the lotto anytime soon, trying to be reasonable with this purchase haha

I'm currently on my third 911 and electrically they've been fine, the only issue I've had in my time owning them was with my 89 C4 that had problems with the brake booster. I still prefer the looks and the size of the air cooled cars but the newer cars are better in every other aspect. As far as upkeep I've done the suspension and brakes on my current 911 turbo and as long as you track the parts down yourself and don't go through the dealership the prices have been no worse than any other car I've owned (NSX included).

Cool man. The 911's have a very small rear seat? I don't plan to put anyone back there but just wondering. Also the hatch/trunk area can fit a big hockey bag? and a couple hockey sticks? I'm a hockey player, albeit a terrible one hahaha

The rear seats are small yes, but I know several people who cram their kids into child seats back there so the rear seats aren't useless. As for the hockey bag and sticks, I think the only way you're going to do that is reclining the passenger seat and laying it all in there, I've packed a 911 full of groceries before but no large objects. I've found that there is usually a way if you plan it properly, I've went on vacation for a week in an Elise, I just packed light and used the passenger foot-well for storage.

Not really unless you are talking about older pre 2008 models.

Porsche has been pushing price down for Canadians and up for Americans for the last few years.

It fits a child (I transport a 4 y/o in mine all the time) but don't expect it to be useful. I had no idea a child needs to much stuff when travelling in a car. 2 adults and a child, plus stuff the kid needs (teddy bear, drinks, snacks, toys) is near impossible. Short trips only.

Groceries are a PITA. Passenger seat only. Don't try to go shopping with 2 pepole in the car, you can't buy more than $100 worth of groceries and expect to carry it all back.

Hockey sticks? Golf clubs? Man good luck haha. I'm probably selling my 6TT this summer because of the lack of room. I can see using my BS more often than the 6TT (usable rear seats, full trunk).

Hey Ray, I personally prefer the 911 about 100 times more than the Elise, I was just never sold on it and I ended up spending a lot of money to modify it trying to like it. The main problem for me was the engine, it's just gutless, even after a full supercharger kit it still wasn't as fast as my 911 was stock. The ergonomics didn't bother me, I like bucket seats and I never found ingress and egress that difficult. The car definitely got a lot more attention and I had fun working on it but I doubt I would buy another one, I actually believe that the NSX is a far better choice than the Elise as well even with it's weak engine. Thinking about it now I probably even liked my old 911's more than the Elise, the Elise is right for some people just not me.

I went to Weissach to test drive and almost bought one there but a local car came up for sale in the perfect color combination (black/red) so I jumped on it.

Dad owned a 76 911, and for the first ten years of my life every road trip we did was in that car. Vancouver, Portland, San Diego etc. Mom, Dad, younger Sister and myself. Eventually I didn't fit in the back and 4 or 5 years later Dad sold the car, but I don't ever remember it being a hassle, maybe that's just nostalgia fogging my memory but....

Kids are pretty spoiled these days. All I ever had was a few books on tape, couple G.I Joes, and some Madlibs, again maybe nostalgia but I don't ever remember being bored either. We started doing roadtrips in a Minivan (poor Dad) when I got to big, but none of them were as memorable as the trips we took in that 911.

Depends on what you are looking for, I have a 996 c4s, with the c4s you get a carrera that is wider in the hips (aka more sexy) the Carrera 2 and 2S has more usable trunk space up front since it does not have to worry about accomodating the extra parts for awd. Mine is fully loaded and a hair over 100k km and have really invested fawk all into it besides brakes, tires, oil changes, and air filters. I did once spring a coolant leak that was caused by a broken t fitting off a coolant return line which cost a whole $20 from the dealership and 1 hour to install.

Winter driving wise it is by far the best winter vehicle I have had, the traction control, stability control, and awd are by far some of the best I have experienced. I have owned a 2004 STi, 2003 Grand Cherokee, 1998 Durango, 2007 Ram 3500, 2008 Toyota Tundra etc. Except for ground clearance I prefer the porsche in winter to any of these. In three winters I have been hung up once. I also have pictures towing stuck trucks which is entertaining. People say there is nothing like driving a subaru in the snow... well all I have to say is that they have never driven a porsche in the snow. I used to work up in Norman Wells and would see them testing porsches on a test track in yellowknife occasionally. If they can handle Yellowknife in the winter, they can handle Edmonton or Calgary. My only bitch is the room. But I have a roof rack. I can fit two pairs of snowboard boots and gear in the trunk, 4 boards on the roof rack, a bike on the roof rack, 2 full sized suitcases in the back seat, 2 sets of golf clubs in the back seat etc. After owning one for a while you get pretty creative with how to load it. Also with seat adjustments you can fit people in the back. With sport seats you can raise and lower the front seats. With the front seat raised and moved forward, I have fit one 6ft tall person up front with knees pretty well up against the dash, and 1 5'10 people in the back with feet under the front seat and knees against the back of the front seat. Given it is uncomfortable the 3 of us were able to make a trip to Calgary from Edmonton without any serious need to see a chiropractor.

any idea how much a decent 996TT is to bring up from the states?

Good example low mileage 996TT's run around $50k USD for the facelifted cars (2002+). Tack on Duty, GST, exchange, RIV, A/C fees you're around $58k in. For 01's you can find 'em for $45k (about $52k all said and done). Cut a few grand for tiptronic cars. If you don't care about mileage, you can find some nicely worn (70k+ miles) cars in the $40k range, $46k by the time it's here. Don't forget to add airfare or shipping expenses.

The US prices have pretty much bottomed out on low mileage cars. I haven't seen much movement over the winter, and will probably start going up a little now that spring is here.

Another thing to take into consideration is color, I wanted a white 996TT when i was in the market I couldn't find a half decent white 996TT for shy of 60K (thats like 997TT money). OP rear seats in the 996TT are useless, I am in the process of pulling them and ordered the GT2 Rear Seat delete carpets.. Im 5'9 and my head hits the roof in the rear.. Buy Rage's car!!:dunno:

Where do you guys get your Porsche serviced at? Alpine Autowerks? Dealership?

Am I reading the PDF right?

Minor maintenance every 30,000kms for 05-07 Carrera's? Oil/filter changes, brake fluid

Major maintenance every 60,000kms for air filter and spark plugs

I'm looking for 05-06 Carerra's with under 60,000kms so chances are if I ask for service history, there would only be 2-3 depending on oil change frequency?!

I'm getting my car serviced at Alpine.

max_boost should step up and get a Turbo. I debated between a 997 C4S and a 996 Turbo and went with the turbo because it's more reliable. The non turbos (996 and 997) suffer from random rear main seal failures. Google that up if you want to get scared. Not that it happens to every non turbo 996/997, but I don't want to play that lottery on an off warranty car. Repair jobs costs more than 1/2 of the car value lol.

they recommend oil is done once per year or 30 000 km which ever comes sooner.

These 996TT discussions have to stop  I decided last year that this May I'm getting a 2010-11 Corvette GS and then obviously a winter beater but everytime I read about these 996TT's it has me doubting the vette :nut:

Yes I know they are not the same kind of cars, one is a N/A, RWD V8 that's not very practical and one is an AWD beast that you can drive all year round but still...

So options are:

Buy a 997 and be prepared to replace the IMS for $2K and RMS for $10K.

Or buy a 997 Turbo and not have to deal with the above? haha

Or just go for the GT, Sam. This could you be!
