A special constable with the County of Grande Prairie has been slapped with charges after allegedly pretending to be a Mountie.
The off-duty special constable allegedly intervened in what appeared to be a shoplifting offence late December, 2005 in the city 456 km northwest of Edmonton, said Mounties in a news release.
An employee at a retail store had approached two males who'd left the store after an anti-theft alarm sounded.
It's alleged the special constable intervened, represented himself as a police officer, and gave the name of a Grande Prairie RCMP member.
It was later determined the anti-theft device was not functioning properly and nothing had been stolen.
Mike Kilani, 35, has been charged with personation with intent, assault, and personating a peace officer.
