"Founder of the Swedish furniture and home goods company IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad is the proud owner of a 13-year-old Volvo 240 GL. Though he may own a Volvo, Kamprad still takes the bus and even uses his pensioners’ discount card, as he explained in a rare 1999 interview. Despite being a double-digit billionaire, Kamprad also still flies economy class and avoids luxury hotels. In fact, in his self-scribed 1976 Bible, “A Furniture Dealer's Testament,” Kamprad decries that “IKEA people do not drive flashy cars or stay at luxury hotels.” Indeed, Ingvar Kamprad practices what he preaches."

lol, a multi billionaire is driving a 1993 Volvo 240 GL

People at that level, don't really care about showing off in cars or anything. They just need something to get them around, why waste any extra money?

Cheap is definitely not the correct word, practical would be the better word to use.

People do realize that Bill Gates owns well over 100 cars, right? He has everything from Ferraris to a Bugatti EB110 and a Veyron and has pretty much everything a man could want for a garage. Hell, he even has a two storey underground garage for all his cars

Ah... to be a billionaire

ahahha yeah, i was like HEY a dodge driver... although its not an 05 ram it was close enough... p.s. 959's for shexy, i watched a show on tv about porsches a few weeks back and it was mentioned, definately a sexy little machine i would say. anyone else heard much on it and what the big thing on it is? because the show just mentioned it nothing in detail so i wonder what the cuffuffle is all about for it?

mmmmm 959. Last I had heard the car wasn't street legal, love how Bill Gates more or less changed the law to allow his on American roads. Probably one of my favorite Porsches of all time.

A close long-time family friend is a billionaire. He drives a 1996 Honda Accord and doesn't plan on getting anything newer. He owns a modest home in the NW, and still wears some of the clothes that he first came to Canada with. His son, who operates and manages most of the assets, is opposite. He built a large home on the side of a mountain, and likes to spend. To each their own. Some people have different priorities for their money.

some of these guys are really old too
they're old fashioned, they dont care about their car, or the new wave of ferrari's and lambos, and etc.

when they're thinking about world domination like the way they do, the last thing on their mind is probably a car

I remember reading an article that said Gates bought another 959 and gave it to the government to crash test and it was cause of him and 959's can be driven in the US.

the thing is though some people can have all the money in the world and still be like that. my mom for instance, if you gave her 2 billion she'd buy apartments and rent them out. she'd be driving our current 2001 corolla, i on the other hand would be driving a m3 and have a 360 modena garaged and driven on the weekends.

it's hard to explain and you won't understand unless you are one but Volvo enthusiasts love Volvo's so much that it doesn't matter how much money they have for "nicer" cars

every car i sit in, drive, look at, i say this isn't as good as an old Volvo, that will never change, it just won't, i do agree a car can be sick a shit and i love it to death...but i would never not have a Volvo

and if you don't believe me that's fine but it's like a cult thing...once you drive/own a Volvo you don't want anything else for a daily driver

a guy here in town, big oil company ceo collects mercedes'...collects them, so like more than 5, i think he has around 10-15, old and new...what is his daily driver....a Volvo...an OLD VOLVO...and he wont sell it

anyway

that's why this guy has one...he is a Volvo nut...

my aunt is a millionaire. And my mom used to tell me that her secret was saving zip lock bags so that i wouldn't throw them out and she wouldn't have to buy new ones. Just wash them. lol.

Those people probably realize a old Volvo and a Ferrari Enzo will do the exact same thing, esp. if they aren't into cars like we are...

When you're a billionaire, you don't have to show off ;)
Also, a lot of high profile people don't like the attention that goes along with a super exotic car.

Precisely..alot of people seem to think "geez, they have so much money, why don't they buy a better car"..but the reality alot of people really don't care..a car serves one purpose - to get you from a to b...

Their are tons of people in Calgary who drive pretty 'average' cars but could be driving something 100x that..

If cars arn't your thing and you don't need an expensive car to show everyone else how much money you make a 15 year old volvo is reasonable transportation.

As far as airline class is concerned. I know extreamly wealthy people (maybe close to billionaire) who live in this city and fly coach.

I remember a story years ago about one of the Billionaire brothers , Mr. Hunt ( can't remember his first name ) , who was seen in a gas line in his 1970's Impala or Crapice . Funny how the guy could by his own oil company , but still had the patience to stit a line waiting to buy gas . Truthfully , that probably has something to do with their clan being so rich . " A penny wasted is a penny saved " comes to mind .
Also , i know it'll be hard for some of you to fathom , but a car doesn't make the man . A man makes the car . Having the flashiest car tells most people that the person driving it " more then likely " is just suffering from some deep insecurity issues . Kinda like when you see a grey-haired 60 year old driving a Corvette , your classic middle-aged crisis syndrome . Don't get me wrong though , there are a few car entusiasts like Jay Leno who has a great passion for cars thats more then just a hobbiest . Does Gates fall into this catagory ? Most likely not .

It's like me with Hondas.... I know that with my chosen career path in 5 years I could easily be driving an S2000 or even an NSX... but I'm never selling my 90 Civic DX sedan :D I just absolutely, unequivocally, supremely LOVE my Honda. Same as people that drive Volvos (and yes, I've driven a turbo Volvo, so I know that they are up there with Saab for 2nd gear grunt :D )

Although, if I had a couple billion lying around, you could be quite safe in knowing I had a Veyron in my garage :bigpimp:

Has anyone ever seen the movie 'Be Cool'. There is one part where Travolta is getting into his hybrid car and some guy asked him how fast does that go- sarcastically. Travolta responds "when your important, you don't need to get there fast, people wait for you" or something close to that. While not exactly the same as this thread, rich people don't need items to identify them as rich. A vehicle when you have billions of dollars will neither increase or decrease your status.

I'd still buy every car that goes 0-60 in 5 seconds and under :D
