I was wondering how hard it is to sand down your car and prep it for paint. What grid paper do you use and is there any particular techique used.

well it all depends on if you have scratches you need to sand out, and dents you need to repair. If you want to sand down your car and get ready to paint it, use a wet/dry 500 grit paper, and then follow it with 800. You don't want to go any finer cause the paint will eventually peel off. Best thing to do is wet sand it, that will cut down on the amount of dust you prouduce.
For scratches, sand it out, you want to feather out your edges so you don't get any waves. Then after apply some primer. U can use a heavier grit for you scratchs (120-320).
If you are doing body work, like fixing dents and what not. Make sure you prep your area good. Grind the damage area, and then feather edge it out with a 80-120 grit, and then apply your filler. Depending on the size of you damage you will want to sand the filler with a good sized block. If you don't have cash make it out a block of wood (make sure your working with a straight surface). For applying primer to your filler, use a primer to which you add harder and reducer to it, that will prevent sinkages and if you apply it right it will be easy to sand.
To double check your body work, apply a "guid coat" to the primer. That is basically a mist of spray paint (black) that you would sand off when dried. You will be able to depict low spots and heavy scratches. If found their is a special 2 part puddy (hardner, filler) that you can apply appropriatly and sand with a smoother sand paper (120-320) make sure you re-apply primer and go through the steps. Sand primer with 500-800 grit. ITs hard if you don't know what you are doing. Thats why their is trades people, who specialize in certain things.
