Hi Everybody,
I'm new to this board. I'm going to move to Canada from Germany for to study Computer Engineering. Because I'm a car inthusiast and interested in talking to like-minded people, I would like to check out the board and say a quick hello.

I'm orginally from Magdeburg, Germany and from January '07 I'll be doing my PhD at the UW in Waterloo.

I use to help out in my cousins independent garage. He (http://www.race-corner.de/) is into customizing and refurnishing cars.

Right now, I'm driving a Citroen Xsara (Sorry to mess up your view about Germans but not everyone has a VW, BMW, or MB here :) ... But I'm about to comply with the sterotype...). We are refurnishing an 1987 Mercedes Benz 190E. I'm thinking of importing this car to Canada. However, I have only found little information about importing cars from other countries than the US.

Have a nice day

Welcome to the site tommy_W201!
You probably won't have a problem importing your 190, cars 15 years or older are allowed to be imported in Canada.
It'll cost a lot though, I got a quote for my 190 to Calgary from Liverpool, it wAS AROUND £900.

Anyway less talk more pictur posting of your 190. :D
Is it a 16V too?

Welcome, enjoy your stay.

Got some pics of the Benz?

You won't have a problem 15 year wise to import the car, if it will pass OOP Inspection when its here would depend on how you guys do the refinishing of it.

Beyond has tons of information on importation I'm sure we can dig some up for you.

You can import any car that's over 15 years old, have it registered and insured right here.

You can also bring any car that you like, drive it here as long as you going to stay but the car needs the plates and insurance from the Germany and every 6 months you would have to cross to USA for quick shopping trip. You cant leave it behind when you go back to Europe.

There was Opel Astra on German plates driving around Calgary some 7 years ago there was also Trabant :D on german plates.

I know people that had brought number of 911, 850 and M5 to sale it right here for profit.

Anybody has a link to Transport Canada so he can look it that ?
Importing the car from Germany is no different than bringing the car from Japan.

if he comes to study I think he's allowed to bring the car isn't he? I've heard of other things like that

he is, but for only 6 months at the time, so every 6 month a quick trip to usa and back over the border, plus he's not allowed to leave the car behind once he's thru with his study

:werd: But the car is only allowed in the country for a year ( probably only applies to cars 15 year old or newer).:dunno:

Thanks for your warm reception.

I'll post pics of my Benz-restauration-project as soon as I get into the garage again. It was orginally a Taxi. The 190E and D models were quite common here as Taxies until the late 90s. So you can easily get an old one for a couple hundred to 1500 EUR (aproximately 700-1700 CDN) here. Nowadays, you'll also see a lot of the W124 and the newer C-class as taxi here. If you want to have fun, while you're on holidays in Germany, try to get a taxi in the major cities (e.g. Berlin, Hamburg, München). Sometimes you can also get a ride in an old W123.

In the meantime, I could post pics of my Citroen, if you like. I hope it is ok to post pics of cars that were not intended for the Canadian market.

I'm going to dig up the information about exporting to create a thread like JAYMEZ_STi thread about importing from the US (http://forums.beyond.ca/showthread.php?s=&threadid=107279) for older imports from Germany. Since I'm doing that kind of export to Canada for the first time, I'd appreciate any help about the paperwork to do at the Canadian Customs and in Canada. I guess this thread might be a good contribution to this community, since some of you also like to drive German cars in Canada.

Can anyone please post a link/reference about tax/insurance rates for a 190E in Canada?

Thanks a lot
