Could somebody tell me if it was a new one?

Stupid related question, but how can I tell (in advance) what weeks will have new episodes of shows, and how do they pick them?...
For example, the last 2 weeks have aired old family guys, yet the week before was new...
I thought they would all be new until the TV season ends.
