Is Mazda a subsidary or a sister company of Ford? I just recently heard that Ford made Mazda so I have to know if its true. Thanx

Ford bought out Mazda, so Mazda is a subsidiary of Ford.

They have been partners for years and years. The Ranger and the B-series trucks have been built on the same platform from almost the beginning.

Ford relationships with many manufacturers.

i.e. Nissan Quest = Mercury Villager

Isn't there only like 3 or 4 car makers now. Everyone is owned by someone else.

my 1988 mazda 626 was made in Japan, but I think the non turbo version may have been built in Mexico / North America

the lower volume models probably are.

Things like the MX-5, RX-8 are likely still made in Japan. I am sure everything else is made in North America. could be wrong though.

My Mazda3 is from the Hiroshima Plant in Japan.

I think the Mazda 6 is produced in Michigan, and I also read somewhere that the Mazda 3 is starting production in China. Not sure about their trucks though. It seems Mazda has kept most of it's manufacturing in Japan though.

Mine's from one of the Hofu plants - the main Mazda3 production facilities.

The 3's based on Ford's C1 platform - also used for the Volvo S40 and the MkII (Euro) Focus.

The only distinct Mazda product left is MX-5 and RX-8.

Everything else is share with other Ford products.

Did the Escort ever share any Mazda technology? Somebody told me this once. Kinda curious why all other early-90's Fords have died yet the Escorts live on with very few mechanical problems...

The RX8 is made in Japan. Ford is using the Mazda 6 chassis in a number of cars throughout the world.

Ford has a Mazda plant just south of Detroit which does build some cars.. I can't remember exactly which ones but I believe quite a few.. It's a huge plant.

Also, Ford owns many companies.. Volvo, Mazda, Land Rover, Jaguar just to name a few. It's the "Ford family of car companies" ford.com is your friend. Yah i'm biased.

The disturbing thing to me is that Mazda is using that crappy Ford duratech V6 in the Mazda 6 instead of developing their own V6. Outside of the turbo 4 cyl in the Mazdaspeed 6, Mazda has been producing some pretty anemic engines. Hell even Volvo shares some platforms with Ford & Mazda.:dunno:

Remember the days when Mazda was a great engine maker.

Now most engines are hand me downs from Ford with tweaks by Mazda Engineers.

Totally agree. The old DOHC 1.6L turbo engines they used to put in the 323 were practically indestructable as well as the SOHC 2.2L turbos in probes & MX6's. The small displacement V6's they made in the early 90's while low on torque were smooth and reliable. The supercharged V6 in the little known Millenia was a jewel of an engine. Now can you name a good engine? The renesis rotary is a failure IMO and the lack of low end torque is the main reason a great handling car like the RX8 is falling well below sales expectations. The 4 cylinder engines in the current 3, 6 , and Miata are unremarkable at best. It's time for Mazda to put the zoom back into their engines and please no more Ford engines as outside of the old 5.0L Ford has made a habit of making underpowered, unrefined, & poor gas mileage engines.

Porsche is not owned by the VW group. It is independant. It actually own 20% of VW.

VW does own Skoda and SEAT as well.

GM owns Vaxhall, Holden, Opel and a bunch of other brands. They used to own Suzuki, but sold off all but 2.5%.

Didn't DC recently sell their stake in Mitsu?

BMW only owns Mini and Rolls Royce.

You have Land Rover twice. It was BMW's, now Ford's.

Mitsubishi isn't Chrysler's any more, they pulled out. Still have partnership in development.

VW does not own Porsche. Porsche is on their own, they only borrowed Toureg for their SUV.

Others:

Toyota:
Lexus, Toyota, Subaru, Scion

Renault:
Renault, Nissan, Infiniti

Honda:
Honda, Acura

Mazda has been very good at keeping their rotary and performance projects away from Ford.. don't think that's gonna change. Pretty sure that Ford takes alot more from Mazda than Mazda takes from ford.

Funny how alot of people didn't realize this early.. didnt people realize that the mx-6 and the probe were the same car??? :)

Well, GM owned 20% of FHI (Subaru's parent) and Toyota bought 1/2 of that 20% from GM.

What Toyota get out of it:

- Subaru AWD and Engine technology
- Subaru's Indiana Plant will now built 100K Camry/year

What Subaru get out f it:

- Subaru will build Hybrids based on Toyota's design.

You'll also find Ford labelled parts in Accords and Nissan parts in Subarus. And I swear I've seen the new Civic's window switches on a Saturn before.

Parts comes from everywhere as long as the provider than meet manufacturer's specs.

That is because the interiors of most cars are made by Johnson Controls, not the actual manufacturer. That is why you will see similar, if not the same interior parts on many different brands that usually have nothing to with one another.

LMAO, those days are LONG gone. Ford had mazda make them the "escape" engine (2.5L V6) and it was a frickin' disaster. I used to work at a ford dealership whereas every week another Escape would come back, under the 60k warrenty: needing a new engine. Something would go in the engine, and they'd come back not running at all, if not seized solid entirely.

It was incredible. I thought mazda made great engines too, until I saw that happen as frequently as it did. Any given MX6/626 engine will most likely have lifter noises.. its just a given.

Go mazda go! ;)

GM owns subaru i believe, but they do their own thing. This is why they were able to work with Saab, and gave them the technology to create the Saabaru
