I'm not sure if it's still around but it's alittle out of downtown by Obsorne, my fave restaurant is Sukothai (thai food) then I'd have dessert from Baked Expectations, it's sooo good there, which is somewhere down Osborne Village.

Also try Fude. It's in Osborne Village too.

That's close to downtown.

Merteens is far from modern. It a place where old people go for brunch on Sundays. In fact it is on top of a seniors condo developtment. I would highly recommend AGAINST it.

Here are my picks

Fusion Grill on Academy - http://www.fusiongrill.mb.ca/

Its only a short cab ride from downtown and has AMAZING food and an extensive wine list. Excellent especially if you are going out with co-workers or clients.

Sydney's - http://www.sydneysattheforks.com/

Located at the Forks Market (Winnipegs version of Eau Claire) pretty fancy fair.

Amici - http://www.amiciwpg.com/

Great Italian restaurant. Excellent food and a nicer atmosphere.

Muddy Waters Smokehouse - http://www.wowhospitality.ca/restaurants/muddywaters.html

Winnipeg's version of Big T's BBQ (however its 10 years older) and has amazing food. On the weekend they have blues bands playing and if its nice outside the patio has EXCELLENT views.

Saffron's Restaurant

This is a pretty cool place on Corydon Ave (which is similar to 17th Ave SW). Neat restaurant, almost always busy (might need reservations?). It has excellent food and a casual atmosphere overall.

Mrs. Mikes

Now I assuming you might have some downtime and a craving for probably the best burger known to man. Well, this is where you will find it. Mrs. Mikes is a little place on Tache (a fair walk from the Forks/Downtown) but their KingBurger will put you in heaven. I took my father in law and brother in law there and they said that they have never eaten a burger that was better (I havent either). My family has been going there for over 30 years and they havent changed AT ALL. Be warned! Its a TOTAL hole in the wall and there is no seating inside (hell there is no "inside" at all). But DAMN it will be worth the effort. I have lived in Calgary for 5 years now and I still go back for their burgers. They know me by name so just mention that "Jason from Calgary" sent you. They will treat you right.

Anyhow... this is just a small list. There are tons of good restaurants in the city. You just have to know where to look. Let me know if you are looking for anything else. I lived there for over 20 years and still go back regularly.

Ok. I want you to be as well prepared as possible. So heres a few more.

Liberty Grill - http://fae-wpg.com/liberty/libertygrill.htm

Good for lunch as supper. New York style bistro on Lombard. Great atmosphere and incredible food.

Decanters - http://www.where.ca/winnipeg/guide_listing.cfm?listing_id=3750

A great little wine bar with amazing food. Also in the heart of downtown in an old historic building in the Exchange district.

Braemar Bakery

This place is just plain fun. A restaurant by day and a unique club by night. Amazing caribbean cuisine for lunch an supper and in the evening turns into a caribbean themed club that is probably some of the most fun you could have in the evenings. Tucked away in a residential area around the Osborne Village but tons of fun (especially when there is live music).

If you like Sushi. Go to "Wasabi" on Broadway. Be sure it's the one on Broadway because the other "Wasabi" isn't that great.

Honestly, some of the best sushi i've ever had. I go there everytime i'm in Winnipeg.
