Well im plannin to build one for the hell of it....

Ok ive heard that u cant lay a lawnmower engine on its side b/c of how the gas lines and everything are layed out, is this true?

Also i was wondering if anybody has some extra, or knows of a cheap place to get some sort of engine suitable for a gokart(max 20hp)

thx

there is a kart club in town... maybe ask them..

http://www.ckrc.ca/

it'd probably be much more reasonable just to buy one.

If you are building one for shits and giggles more power to you. However, if you are building one for the go-kart track you first need to find out what class you want to run in. I just purchased a kart and my engine is a Briggs & Stratton that was built specifically for the World Challenge series (15 hp). The engine was $1700 plus installation and the used chassis was around $1500. A new chassis would be between $3000 and $5000 depending upon what you get.

I have an old Honda XR80cc 4-stroke dirt bike with a newer engine in it. It's unrideable and has been sitting in my yard for a couple years, but the engine is still in good shape. I'd be willing to let it go for like $250.

This solves the problem of putting an engine on its side. Also. its more than powerful enough :)

An older 4-stroke 80cc engine of that type will have maybe 5 or 6hp. But it does have a built-in trans.

The engine is a '98. the frame of the bike is an '81. It's oldskool. And I garantee you it makes WAY more than 5 or 6hp.

A new xr100 with a pipe barely makes 8hp.

ZedMan is right, its a dirtbike so it doesnt have to produce lik 50 hp....
