Hockey Night in Toronto.... err I mean Canada sucks ass. Now that TO is out golfing, their weekly HD TO coverage switches to Ottawa and Montreal for 1st round playoffs. CBC has all the rights for Calgary first round games, and none are in HD. FUCKERS!!!

Way to go CBC... is this where our oil money's going?

G2 Edmonton @ Detroit Sunday, April 23 @ 1 p.m. ET

This game is being covered in HD by NBCHDW. Not sure if it's going to be blacked out on Bell ExpressVu and Starchoice because I believe CBC has exclusive rights.

Looks like TSN's games are all SD, no HD.

This game may be in HD from NBC depending on how things play out.

All playoff games usually are.

Also, this news sucks. And if TSN isn't going to do it, and neither is Sportsnet...so much for the HD revolution. Let's get on with it, guys.

Thats shit, the even shittier thing, is i had to order some games payperview this season cause i wasn't in calgary, you'd think that at least then they could make it HD, but no, such a piss off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We don't have HD cameras here at the Saddledome I think that's why.. It's not just the truck but they need the proper cameras too or it just looks like poop upconverting..

The full widescreen HD games will be nice though. Go Wings till you meet Flames in the conference final!

The games on NBC will definitely be in HD and doubtfully blacked out. Well hopefully anyway.. Once you see a game in HD it's hard to watch it any other way.. I watched Phoenix games last year just because they looked so good. :P

They have mobile HD trucks that sit only in Eastern Canada. There are mobile HD trucks out west as well, but they don't own them and just rent them. I guess CBC just doesn't like to rent the trucks cuz Western Canada's not important enough for anything.

It's a lot more than just cameras and satellites, they do a lot of the production stuff in the truck. Check out HDNet's 2 mobile HD trucks.

http://www.hd.net/mobileunits.html

To ensure HD for flames games, we need a local station to convert to HDTV, and sign a contract for local broadcast rights with the flames. Ain't gonna happen :D. If a local station gets an exclusive local broadcast rights contract with the flames and doesn't upgrade to HD, then we're going to be screwed for HD coverage... even if TSN or CBC brings HD cameras here, we'll be SOL and get the local SD feed, with all HD feeds blacked out.

I had a feeling this was going to happen. As far as TO is concerned, they don't want to even acknowledge the fact that Calgary exists.

I can live without HD, but not Chris Cuthbert. He's the reason why I loved watching HNIC. Jim Hughson is just plain annoying.

Damn you CBC! :guns:

No HD? Gaaaaaaaay.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the HD trucks out here if the Flames get rolling and start looking like serious contenders like they did in 03-04 though.

Well that solidifies my decision to take back my HD box before my month "trial" is up so to speak. I'll wait a little longer til we get more content and more in 16:9 at least.

I have worked with some of Dome's trucks (nothing to do with the Saddledome), but haven't been on a HD truck yet. There is a hell of a lot more than just camera's involved for an HD broadcast, or any broadcast for that matter. The Saddledome wouldn't need to have HD cams, because the cameras would be where the trucks are.

Yep, that was a good one - we won (3-1, I think? 3-2?) because McCarty scored the game winner. It was great to see it in HD, but after that we got the shaft.

Calgary Aneheim series is on OLN for US people for games 1 and 2, not on Center Ice.

I heard CBC is only covering the oilers game, meaning Calgary fans without tickets won't be able to see the game at all, unless they have center ice. Can't find center ice confirmation of game 1 tonight for canadian subs.

You guys gotta get your eyes checked, that was widescreen SD. They use SD 4:3 cameras and equipment to hammer out a 16:9 and 4:3 image at 480i resolution like the DVD standard, but the way it was shot and processed, it's a bit worse than DVD quality.

haha I figured that out last night when I realized you couldn't see the actual mesh above the end boards, just a kind of dark haze

Edm @ Detroit on CBC so far is 4:3 SD on CBC-HD.

NBCE HD is blacked out... well, mirrored. Channel 815 (NBCE) is a copy of Channel 820 (NBCW) on ExpressVu. So looks like no HD for this game for Canadian ppl.

It looks awesome on NBCE on US networks.

I dunno....I personally don't think watching hockey games in HD is all that great. Yah it's obviously more defined but really how much definition can you have on a white sheet of ice.

I find it more annoying when they don't show NFL games in HD. Superbowl was WICKED in HD!

The puck, being probably the most important part of the game, is about 3 pixels by 2 pixels at 480i resolution. Have you seen slow-mo HD replays? There's no question as to who tipped it in, even live, when watching in HD. In SD, even slow-mo replays you can't tell.

I watched the Ottawa game as well. Same quality as all other CBC-HD productions, looking a bit soft. I've been bitching about it for a while now hehe.

ya it may look a bit soft to you on your HD tv but on mine it looks 10 times better than the standard channel. Plus it's not distorted from being stretched from 4:3. Believe it or not rage the hd channels look really good on an edtv as well. Basically dvd quality. :D

rage2
04-24-2006, 05:22 PM
haha ya I know. What I meant was you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the soft HD picture that CBC is providing vs good 1080i HD such as some TSN-HD games and HDNet games.

04-24-2006, 06:10 PM
