I have often seen camera lenses at pawn shops & cash converters type places...has anyone purchased these before? Are there any 'deals' to be had or is the quality generally poor?

Pawn shop lenses are generally a crap shoot as far as quality goes. You might get a bad copy, or an abused one, or a downright broken one. However, there are always deals to be found, I think there's a lot of older MF Canon lenses that might be worth your while if you can cope with manual focus. Even stores like The Camera Store have some good deals in consignment lenses - I got my 50mm F1.8 with Heliopan filter for $50.

Canon's old FD and FL lenses aren't compatible with the EF mount.

They're not? Gee, score another point for F-mount, eh? :poosie:

I kid, I kid. Just have to poke a little fun at the Canon guys. :D

Check out Vintage Visuals (http://www.vintagevisuals.com) if you're looking for used glass. The pawn shops tend to let the owner know when they have something and it will end up going there anyways. Mainly manual focus and older lenses, but they do have good glass every once in a while. I've seen a 17-40 f4, 70-200 f4, 20-35 f2.8L, 28-135 IS, 50 f1.4, 100 f2.8 macro there before. But the good stuff gets snapped up quick. Check the website often.

I picked up an older 80-200 from a Pawn shop on 16th for a good price and it has been working fine for a year.

If that's supposed to be an FD-EF adapter, it won't work. The problem is that FD lenses need to be closer to the film/sensor plane than the EF mount will allow to achieve proper infinity focus. Even if you could attach the lens past the mount, you'll have problems with mirror clearance. This adapter would only be useful for macros, since it's essentially an extension tube.

Canon released FD-EF adapters when they introduced the EF mount, but they were only intended for professionals so they're a rare find. Even then, they were really 1.2x converters and you still lost a stop.

VV is a rip off! But they do like to haggle....

If you want cheap lenses and don't mind manual focus, look into M42 mount lenses. You can find some *very* sharp lenses at really cheap prices (ie: between $50-200). You can score adapters off ebay for like $10-15. Older Pentax and Carl Zeiss Jena lenses came in this mount. They're very adaptable and can be used on almost any 35mm system.
