i was looking on autodreams site and jdm connections site and i was trying to figure out why the s13 redtop vs blacktop were different prices. the redtop was about 500 bucks cheaper and i was wondering why that the case, all the specs on each engine seemed to be the same unless i missed something. i was thinking it might be newer vs older versions of the s13 sr20 but does anyone know why there is a price difference?

Quote from autohelper:

"The S13 black top is the same thing as the S13 redtop but just a newer version. there is nothing different about it, it will just be newer if you bought one of those compared to the redtop. the S13 redtop's came in:
the 91-93 180SX and the 91-93 Silvia
the S13 blacktop's came in:
the 94-96 180SX"

I think the blacktop has the sorta like VTEC...some valve timing thingie whereas the redtop does not...but I could be wrong

it's just age and reliability differences

There are 2 differnt blacktops the blacktop s13 motor was available up to 1998. Picture its as an s13 sr20det redtop with a differnt valve cover, thats it.

s14 sr20det's were available with vvtc only

Wow spread the mis information. The two engines ARE not the same. Several parts of the internals are different, some of the castings are different as well. However number wise and spec wise the two motors are identical. The blacktop offers a few advantages over the redtop though. The major one being the better oil pump on the blacktop. There are differences though nothing seriously major.
