I've been pondering picking up a turbo MKII MR2 (90-95) as a project car. Anyone know of any specific years to avoid?

I was looking on and off for this car but haven't really been able to find a decent one in Red for a good price.

93 was the last year MR2 was available in canada.
93 has revised suspension, beefier transmission and bigger brakes w/LSD as an option.
93 are heavier for some reason

Also 93 red (super red) is different from 91-92 red ( crismson ).

It much easier to get 91-92 in Canada since there were a total of ~1700 93 sold in N.America including those went to the junk yard in the past 10 year ;)

Since the summer is coming, I think you will have a good chance to pick up one soon. :)

Hey Midship,

Thanks for all the info! That was sweet. Do you know if there were any major changes to the post '93 vehicles that were sold in the US? If I can't find a good one up here, I may look to the States.

But the car is in mint condition though, never winter driven before

Hahaha even if it was in perfect shape....I wouldn't pay 25000. 20ish is more like it. Hell you could wait and buy a supra twin turbo for a bit more than that!!!

Hell in this day and age when 93 Del Sol's are selling for over $20k I would not be surprised to see a modded MR2 Turbo selling for that price:rofl:

Lower condition 3rd gens usually go for around 20k. 25000 will acutually get you a really nice one.

No they were only offered in 94, 95 in the states and the rest of the eastern world. The north american 95's are extremely extremely rare and go for around $20 000+ US. They're one car that never seems to looses its value. 2 of the nookmum MR2's in Calgary recently sold for $28K and the other for around 34K. You can pick up a stock 91 turbo with lower kms for anywhere between 17-21k unless of course you find one for sale in the winter and score a killer deal. If you want to try and build an MR2 project car go and find a high mileage turbo mr2 for cheap and drop in the jdm 3rd gen 3sgte engine 245hp, ceramic turbo, no afm...it will be an rx7 tt supra tt killer right off the bat

How easy is the swap to do? Better yet, how easy is the engine to find? Would it be wiser to buy an NA and do the engine swap rather than buying the high milage turbo'd and swaping?

The N/A's arnt particularly cheap either. It really all depends on what kinda deal you can run across.

Altezza - the 94-95 received newer struts and springs as far as i know. ( Bilsteins gas shock ) And those are non-rebuildable.

94-95 has a different wing, tailslight

As far as I know there aren't any signification changes compare to 93 mechanically in N.America. However in Japan, they received GenIII 3S-GTE after 93/10 with in the MR2 world we call it GenIII motor. Which has a better/easier potential for higher HP number ( 400+ ), however getting maintance in Canada ( esp. Cow town ) might be a headache. ;) Also you have to use the whole clip with wiring harness and better yet a standalone ECU since the ECU was programmed for high octane gas in Japan and also running very aggressive timming compare to most other cars.

The NA is not able to handle the turbo engine, you're better to start with a turbo (bigger brakes, axles, better tranny, etc.). The engine is farely easy to find I'm sure yoko here in Calgary could get it for you.
