I heard there are specific ways to drive on a dyno and things to follow could some of you guy ellaborate on some of the finer points? would be a on a AWD mustang dyno. Some steps and how a usualy dyno run goes would be good.


some things I were told were:
-keep wheel straight
-never brake

Why not ask the dyno operator, he should have a clue.

Yeah, I think if you brake, and the dyno is spinning, your car your be thrown forward off of the dyno wheel.

Thats not true as your tires spin the sheel so if you brake the rollers will slow down also.

Touching the brakes increases the probability of bad things happening, not that it will always throw your car off the dyno, but it is more of a safety hazard than a death sentence ;)

Other than that, for AWD/FWD frequently the dyno operator will want to drive the car, but if they are letting you, absolutely keep the wheel straight. The slightest turn can cause damage to where they hooked onto your car, to the dyno, etc.
Smooth shifts, no power shifting. Keep it even, it isn't a race to get to 3rd/4th gear, take it easy.

Other than that, go in expecting low numbers, that way you don't feel bad if it doesn't perform how it should, and don't go with a big group of friends that you have been bragging to about how much power your car makes.

Shift Very smooth , Touching the brakes is bad but a very slight touch you should be ok as long as the car is strapped down and blocked proporly

Don't evn put your foot near the brake. You don't ever need to use it, so don't even think of it as a "what if" option. Just simply don't touch it.

You shift nice and smooth into the next gear. You're usualyl at a very low RPM anyhow unti lyou get to your closest 1-1 gear and then at your pre detemined RPM (DynoJet) or speed (usually a Mustang - at least the one i was on) you mash it until redline and that's it. You sit back and wait for the dyno to brake your car. You ask the guy how you did and go from there. :)

If there is a problem the dyno will brake for you. All you are required to do is get off the gas if the guy gives you that signal.

Heh, remember to clutch in after you left off the gas. :rofl: I always stall on the first run because I forget.

hmm tha'ts great info so usually from gears 1-4, 5 being the final gear, I owuld just shfit and drive as if i was casually driving int he city? shifting around 3-4 rpms and keeping it smoth so the basics of driving a manual. gas out clutch in same times vice versa? and then in final drive floor the shit out of it till redline or designated speed?

No, 5th is normally an overdrive. You want the gear that is as close to a 1:1 ratio as possible. Often 4th.

Just to add, the dyno operator will run you through all of this anyhow if you've never been on one before. That's if they even let you do the pulls. And when I shift it's super low RPM... like about 1500, or as close to it. Because once you hit the 1-1 gear (4th for me in a 6 speed) you'll hammer it to the floor and your run will usually show your curve from 1500 to redline. But this does vary depending on th ecar, dyno, etc etc.

#1 - Keep the wheel straight.
#2 - Never hit the brakes.
#3 - Watch the dyno operator for signals.
