I spoke with the HR manager for my store, and he told me that every Home Depot in Calgary is hiring like mad right now. This would be a perfect job for a student. 40 hrs/week, $12/hr(+), and its not that difficult of a job. The best part for college/university students: if you work the 3 months of summer, at any amount of hours per week, and continue working through the semester, they will pay up to 50%, to a max of $5000/year for your tuition, on a reiumbursement basis!! So if you feel like working 3 days during the summer, then weekends when school rolls around, basically your tuition is covered.

Just thought I'd let you guys know about it, because I didnt know about it until after I started.

Edited, with the proper numbers, thanks to ?????

This is at any Home Depot in North America.

Also, they do profit sharing if your store makes "plan", or exceeds it. Our store is already $1 million over, with 4 months left. w00t for profit sharing

I searched it before its 50% of your tuition, books, fees up to $5000/year. Let me go find it and quote it or link it.

"Tuition Reimbursement — Available to all associates from the first day of employment, the program offers 50% reimbursement, up to a maximum of $5,000 per year, for tuition, books, and registration fees for approved coursework at regionally accredited colleges, universities, and post-secondary technical schools."

Ah, thanks for the clarification, ?????. And Kaput, yes it is available if you work 1 or 2 days a week. A lady here works sundays only, and they're paying for her school.

Well, even still its totally worth it. Especially considering that for most people their yearly tuition is touching 7 thousand a year after books etc.

$3500 is really worth it, I am going to pursue this a little later per its feasibility per my situation.

 Thats an amazing deal! It's better than nothing! I would jump on this if I was in NA.

So, what if you apply during a semester, would they do the same thing? :dunno:

Your apparently eligble for it from the day you start, although my HR manager said that you need to be there for 3 months. And the Home Depot is coming to the UK in about 2 years, although Im sure that doesnt help :)

Yea that makes sense. Kind of like a 3 month probation period... kind of.
Yea that doesn't help, 2 years is quite a while away, I doubt they'll do that tuition thing here, maybe after a few years....

But anyway a big  to Home Depot!

Chances are that you would need to know english, or at least how to spell to work there.

Potentially, Dont quote me on that though. Youd be better off to start work in the summer. Thats what Im doing. 7 days a week. 5 at home depot, 2 at my irrigation job for extra cash

What jobs are there to do at the Home Depot? I have cashier experience as I worked for Safeway for 2 bloody years! =(

Kirbs17

Cashiers and special services/returns would be perfect then, and they get paid well. Other than that, imagine anything to do with home improvements

Is the starting wage the same at all the home depots? There is one right beside me on 16th ave, I think I will go apply tomorrow.

Thanks for the tip Kirbs.

Oh and how do you apply? Should I bring my resume or are there application forms?

Kirbs17

You have 2 years experience as a cashier at Safeway? Id ask for 11, and then at your three month, ask for a dollar raise. thats what I did. Bring in a resume, and they have application forms there. There is also a little math test thing. Just try your best on it, its pretty basic. I think its more just see if you have a heart beat than if you can actually do math. The best part about being a cashier is that there is a lot of training before actual floor work, completely paid for.

I just talked to my buddy and he said they started him at $9.50. Also, the tuition thing is more of a scholarship, you have to apply, its not guaranteed, but he said the requirements are pretty low.

Most people start with 9.50, unless you have experience on cash, or like trade experience

yea all my friends work at the shawnessy one, , most of them started at 10.00 and one started at 9.50. Definitely a good deal if you go to school as well.

Wow, I guess Red Deer is slightly more hurting for workers, being a rig city and all, but the minimum people get started off at here is $11/hr.

Jesus christ, home depot is the gheyest possible company you can work for. Too much corporate propaganda and fake people that are lifers.

Yes, i succumbed to the home depot in my early college days, and by far the worst mistake in my life. The reimbursment, IS bullshit.

Youy have to take a business realted course, and therefore work at the home depot after you are done school. Thank god i got out when i did, i make more in one paycheque now than i did in the 3 months pay lol.

FUCK HOME DEPOT.

Sounds like it was too good to be true to begin with.

Ya, it sorta sounds like the Convergys tuition deal.

The catch was that the courses you took, had to apply to the job you were in.

It hasnt been too good to bee true for me. And my buddy has already gotten $2400 from them, in one semester. But hey, if thats how you all feel, so be it. I'll let you know how the situation goes when it comes time to get reimbursement from them.

Kirbs17
06-01-2006, 01:11 AM
In Red Deer there are mad openings, and when I was driving around Calgary Monday/Tuesday I saw 2 or 4 Home Depots that still had "Now Hiring" signs up..

that would b the case for most of us, since we don't plan on working for them for half our lives
the gd thing is to see low level (excuse me) jobs getting paid for outside training (ie. school in this case)

He was reimbursed for $1500 of his $2200 tuition. Appeared on his pay cheque within in a week of applying. He had worked there for 2 months when he got it.
