anything below 500cc should be a good starter bike :D just keep it under 7000 or 8000 rpm until you are comfortable with riding the bike. i am looking into getting into a bike also and this is the info i was given so i am passing it on :D

If you take a decent course you should be good on anything YOU feel comfortable on. Have you ever been on one before? (Dirt bikes etc?)

And you really shouldn't be afraid to run it through the RPMs. If you're afraid to do that on the bike you own, then it's too much bike for you to begin with.

I take it gordon you are pulling that from your ass.

250cc bike will only go 100km/h, if that.

A good starter bike is a 600cc or 750cc, then again, many people say any bike is a good bike, some say they had 1000cc bikes and did fine. Its up to your confidence, how you feel on it.

A bigger bike = more weight = harding to control at low speeds.

You will get a bike no doubt with too cool motorcycle school, and you can see how you like it.

ive been talking to bike owners etc. :D then again i'm not a big guy so 500cc to start off with would be good for me.

Ninja 250 will do 160kph no problem. Hell, 250 scooters will do 150kph these days with some slight mods.

600's and 750 sportbikes are not starter bikes any more, they are too much for a new inexperienced young rider to get. a 600cc four cylinder these days is good for 10 second quarters and 165MPH... good recipe for disaster when combined with limited new skills.

Have a look at a used SV650 (v-twin 65ish HP), -that's a great starter bike and can hang with (or kill) liter bikes on a small track with a good rider. Also if you can scrape the cash together the New Kawasaki 650 is a cool starter bike with really neat styling.

Used EX500s go for 1500-3000$ for a good one too, they are worth looking at as well. I rode one for a summer 3 years ago and could keep up to most people on the street with it..

the 2 shops i deal with in Calgary are Walt Healy and GW Cycle.

if its your first bike, used is the best way to go. buy an older mid-90's bike and you won't lose much money when you go to sell it a year or 2 later.

I bought a used 2001 yamaha r6 as my first bike, and i did fine. you just can't go crazy with the throttle and you'll be fine. any CC bike can kill you, you just have to use your mush inbetween your ears. make sure you install frame sliders though.. layed my bike down once and frame sliders saved it from any damage!

My 125 Dirt bike could do more than 100 km/h. My old 80cc motocross bike could probably hit 100km/h. 50cc pocket bikes can hit like 50+ km/h even. Also, if its a 250cc it is likely a 2-stroke even for a street bike (I think the 250 ninja is) and 2 stroke's have a ton of power for their weight, which is why they use them.

As for bikes, I have yet to read a bad word about suzuki GSX-R 600's and 750's. If that is beyond your comfort level, i second the Suzuki SV 650 suggestion. Got great reviews too.

The old katana is a perfect bike to learn on. You will more likely than not crash, virtually everyone does with their first bike.

An 89 Katana 600 is what i learned on many years ago. They are cheap to maintain and they run forever. I say go for it. Ride it for a year then move up once you get comforatable.

A good friend of mine has been riding bikes for a long time, she is very short, 5'1", and her cruiser did not go any faster than 100km/h, oh and she is 26 so a little more mature and doesnt lie.

^^^^ ahahaha not until i finish learning lol

cruisers are heavier than street bikes aren't they? they aren't as aerodynamic either. so that could also be a factor in it.

I'm sorry but I don't believe you. What kind of bike is it exactly? POS scooters can hit 100K, no way a cruiser of any kind cant hit the legal highway speed limit.

Oh well she is 5'1", that is relavent.

Don't listen to this crotch stain, any 250cc cruiser will hit 70-85mph without a problem. A 500 cc ninja or gs500 is a perfect learners bike, or a mild mannered 600 like the Katana. I have heard that the Katana's can be a bit top heavy for their size, but you have the right idea for a beginners bike.

The statistics for first year riders dropping thier bikes should encourage you to buy a bike like that, get your skills up, and then move into a 600cc sport bike. And regardless of what any straight away litre bike wannabe racer will tell you, it would take you a decade to get the full potential out of any supersport 600. Ride safe...........

Yeah most will never come close to the limit of a new age 600, in their life with the bike.. A monkey could point one straight and twist the throttle, and hold on for dear life (And thats all you would be if thats what you do with it.. But you always hear it... "I outgrew my 600 after a couple of months"

My first bike is more then likely going to be a 1991 Honda CBR 600. I figure its still a nice bike and I can drive that around for a year and maybe upgrade next year.
