In anyone is interested in track/racing photography, you are invited to join us this Thursday May 11th at the Anglefactory drifting event at Race City.

I think drifting is one of the most exciting forms of automotive event to photograph. Last event, we saw plenty of sideways and bumper shedding out of control action. I'm sure this week will not disappoint.

This is a great opportunity to practice panning shots and just come out and enjoy yourselves. I'd recommend bringing longer lenses and any tele converters you may have for this event.

sweet... what time is the event running at?

I'd love to, but 55mm isn't going to cut it. :(

I'll need to get a 70-200 f2.8 before I try this sort of thing.

Hmmm, I may go depending on time.....and weather, I'm a fairweather photographer....

what time is this happening? I wouldn't mind checking it out. 210mm f4.5 is as long a lens as I have.

Tech starts at 5:30 but I don't think any of the drifting starts until probably around 6:30. Last time, the event continued until almost 10:00.

As far as lenses, I feel a little safer shooting from afar using a telephoto. However, if you got balls, you can get pretty neat effects shooting up close using wide angle as well. Many of the best rally pictures are done this way.

These were shot using a 17-40 lens:

If anyone has questions or tips on shooting racing, let's talk about it here.

Nice pans. Did you use a monopod at all? How close were you with the 17-40? I'm up for this.

About 10-15 feet out. I found the monopod too cumbersome for this as you have to pan in an arc when so close to the action.

I've heard the monopod isn't the greatest for really fast moving sports. I wonder how close I can get with my 10-22....

Anyways, what's the plan for thursday? Just meet down there?

If I go I'll bring my 28-105 and my 70-300....be interesting to see which will be easier to use for this.....plus if active servo focus is really all its cracked up to be?

I have monopod which I use for the bigger lenses. Hand holding the 70-200 is just too much for my back to handle. Let's just meet there. check out www.anglefactory.ca for all the information.

AI servo works really well. However, I noticed that it works alot better if you have a 2.8 lens.

Who else is coming? BerserkerCatSplat? DJ Lazy?

yeah, the 70-300 hunts alot, and its a slow lens....not enough $$$ for the 2.8....$1900 ouch.....I'm sure the VR helps though

weather looks like it's going to be great. Haven't used my 70-210 in a while but I'm bringing it along my 85 and 24-105 as well. Maybe I'll toss the monopod in the car just in case.

Hope I can make it down around 6:30-7:00. All depends on traffic since I'll be making my way down from the NW.
