What are the pros and cons of G60s and VR6s? maintenance, diy difficulty, inherent problems etc

I've never owned one, but I know that they really hold their value if well maintained. They're basically the CRX of the VW world, everyone wants one and they're getting hard to find in good shape.

I love Corrado's, but I keep hearing horror stories about them.

My buddy spent 10 grand getting the super charger working, engine ported, polished and rebuilt and in the end the POS never worked worth shit.

I"ve owned 2 G-60's.
First one was awesome but I wrote it off.
Second one looked great but I blew the SC, then sold it.
IF you have the chance, pick up a VR6.

buddy of mine had a VR6 for a few years, he had problems with it, mainly it would overheat, but I have also heard good things and have met some satisfied owners, i think his was just a lemon

I've had a G60 for almost three months now (I think) and it's been pretty good to me. I burn gas like you wouldn't believe but it's got its share of mods helping that cause. Fun little car, but if you can get the VR6 it sounds like there's less maintenance (no rebuilding of the G-ladder charger) and a little more power out of the box. I would recommend checking out corrado-club.ca as someone else mentioned - lots of knowledge there.

I was going to purchase one (hence my user name :rolleyes: ). I'd reccomend you to take your time and find one thats in overall excellent shape. It's important to start with a completly problem free car so it saves you headaches down the road... and trust me, it's hard as hell finding one in perfect shape (I looked close to 1.5 years for one) and I finally did find one in amazing shape but he was asking 18,000 for it which is WAY too much!!!

Like any older german car, there will be problems here and there if you own one, but alot of the repair work can be done on your own so if your mechanically inclined the Corrado isnt too bad of a car!

beware the dreaded supercharger failure, pricey fix. other then that, pretty much like every other vw.

You guys are complaining about the supercharger fix? thats sooo cheap..

to rebuild the supercharger is $450. To get it rebuilt and improved to a stage 4 SC, its $780.

Thats dirt cheap as far as SC's go.

Only needs to be rebuilt after 60,000k anyways... which is less frequently than replacing apex seals in a rotary.

if you don't like the SC go put on a Turbo. Engine is built for FI anyway. Kits are cheap enough. I found it much more reliable.

yep, VW's 1.8 engine LOVES to be boosted.

Forged head, pistons, crankshaft, connecting rods.. etc etc... the list goes on.

The Corrado is an awesome car, but be prepared to spend some time and money learning about it, searching the web for common problems and fixes.

As for VR6 vs. G60, I did my research when looking for one, and in the end decided to go with the VR6. No charger failures to worry about, the car will be a few years newer, and will have more power out of the box. Plus not to mention that sweet VR6 engine sound.

As people suggested, try the Corrado Club of Canada, and VW Vortex websites for more information and FAQ's. I visit those sites on a daily basis pretty much.

The problem with that is the VR6's are harder to find, and more expensive when you do find them...

If you are seriously looking at modding your corrado, either model will work and then just drop a new engine in... thats what I'm doing.
