Once you restart the computer, if you press F12, do you get the option to "boot from cd", that F12 should list what you can boot from... and your cd drive should be there

How old is the cdrom ? I have run into the problem before where the MB allows boot from cd but the cdrom itself did not support it. That was a HUGE pain in the ass.

/edit: spelling

If you still have windows running, you could make boot disks to start the windows install. Takes a little longer but will probably work

haha i don't have a floppy drive. ahhh!

think my best option is to go get a new cd rom drive?

Not right away, Take your cdrom model number and google it see if anything comes up. Might be able to give it a firmware upgrade *if* it is the problem.(Probably not without a floppy drive though)

Could get one, if it does not work then return it. Otherwise keep it. You can pick em up for dirt cheap now for a good pioneer.

f8 repetitive until the boot screen comes up, it NEVER fails.

Well you can press DEL to enter the bios and change the boot order of your computer, you will want to set the cdrom before the harddrive.

Some systems it is also F9 to check the boot device menu.

It's not a CD-ROM, it's a DVD drive.

So ?

Most bios's still say CDROM as the boot option. Unless it gives you the whole name (Product / Model) of the drive.

the bios key is different for every motherboard. sometimes its f12, sometimes f1, sometimes delete. you have to figure out which one gets you into the bios and then change the boot order and set it to boot from CD.

if you get to the starting windows screen, youre too late. has to be while its testing memory and listing drives or whatever.

Getting into the BIOS isn't the problem here....

Maybe the CD is not bootable?

Plus you have to hit a key to enter the windows setup once it reads the cd, otherwise it just boots of the drive.

That reminds me that IIRC, you won't be able to boot from the upgrade CD. I am guessing your CD is more of the "aftermarket" variety, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Or maybe its a CD that needs to be used in conjunction with a restore disk?
