Does anyone here know how long our car can be out of the country before we have to re-register it and get the proper insurance in the appropriate state that we are in? I'm thinking of taking my car from Calgary to Chicago.

The cut-off I believe is 6 months.

hrmm....how sure are you on this Warren?? If I do get 6 months leeway, then I should be set as I only need the car down here for 3-4 months.

I'm about 95% certain. Gimme an hour and I'll get the for sure answer for you (my dad is an insurance broker, he'll know for sure).

The answer to your question is...it depends. The time limit varies by state. Some states its 6 months, some its 90 days, some you have to change it as soon as you change your official residence. Generally, any time you change locale you should change insurance, because the rates can vary by location (chicago is probably higher risk than calgary, for instance). The short answer: call your broker

haha....thanks for the runaround.

I will call my broker to double check on things. If it is the 6 months you said, then i should be set.

Thanks again dude.
