ME and the misses are looking into getting a Jeep Tj Rubicon. Just wondering if anybody has had any experience with them. We both have street cars and the jeep will be pretty much for going to the mountains, camping, and of course off roading.
Any comments on the jeep would be great.

I highly recommend any jeep whether it is a stock or a rubicon. i would just get a regular jeep with the 6 cylinder, unless you plan on actually doing some big 4x4ing. A stock jeep will do anything you want pretty much, and the things are great in the winter. Wouldn't trade mine for anything.

Locking Differentials is a big reason why i want the Rubicon.

I would have to agree with justincalgary.

Locking Difs: I wouldn't bother.
If you're just going to start wheeling as a hobby...there is LOTS of fun to be had with open diffs. As your skills improve, modify the truck to match the skillset.
I was open/open for almost 4 years before I went to a rear locker (Fozzy Locker).
With this method, you will REALLY appreciate what a locker does for you....know when they are necessary, and when they are not etc.

Mind you...if you DO get one, and don't plan to run in Utah (Moab), Cali (Rubicon), S Dakota (Black Hills) or the coast.....I'll trade ya diffs and Tcase. :D

The rubicon has a better transfer case if you are going to offroad and I think it has the 4 wheel discs.

If you are looking at doing much on the highway driving... I wouldn't go for a Jeep.

I liked mine, but its a noisy bitch on the highway... uses plenty of go-go juice too.

Interior quality isn't real awesome either, lots of people have problems with the gauge cluster going on and off.

i think rubes rule. if can afford it, go for it instead of the standard TJ. better yet, get the unlimited- more room for the gear!

Anyone ever drive/own one of the newer 4cyl tj's? I can get one for next to nothing so Ive been thinking about it for a winter vehicle. Decent gas mileage? Any power?

Now is the time for anyone looking for a Jeep to buy with employee pricing. Also Derrick Dodge in Edmonton bought all of Chryslers excess stock from 2005 so they have some jeeps there at crazy discounts.

Do not buy the 4 cylinder, they have no power at all and the gas mileage was the same on my 4 as my 6. My 4 cylinder wasn't bad in town, but when I travelled to BC, it had a hard time going up the hills. Just my opinion though.

Both the 2.5 and the 4L are not the best in the power departments. There is little that can be done with the Peugot motor...a few bolt on's that are not worth the $. There is a stroker kit or two available for the 4L .... with $$$.

Advantage on the 2.5 over the non Rubicon 4L: 4.10's in the diffs from the factory.;)

For the record: we are a 2.5....running 33" Interco TRXUS M/Ts

You've got to be kidding me about no power for the 4.0L, it has tonnes of power, no problem going up the Roger's Pass at 120 km/h, sure it's no sports car, but that speed in a Jeep to me is really good. The 2.5L could only get up to 80 at certain spots. I have no complaints at all about the 4.0L

LOL
Don't get me wrong....the 4 has more, unladed, than the 2.5.

We ran a trip to Whipsaw in BC last summer.....laded with camping provisions for 4 days in the bush, with us, a Samurai and a Rubi on stock tires.
The Rubi was not doing much better than either of the two 4 cylinders....95-100Km/h on the toughest of hills. And we (Sami and us) were both on 33" Swampers....

So....read into it what you will. Neither motor, IMO, are power houses....nor should they be. It's the final crawl ratio to be concerned about. ;)
