Forest Lawn becoming more disarable and trendy, its part of the BRZ, which includes 17 ave sw, kensington, they will putting a starbucks there soon.

I would move from stupid area in sw to forest lawn. closer to downtown and all services!!

as for "bad" people there are bad people/drugs around all over downtown.

unless they're tearing down every pawn shop in there and replacing it with a starbucks, I don't think its going to make much of a difference.

Lol kensington is miles from forest lawn. Its near rosedale, a very nice family neighborhood. Kensington is like mount royal compared to forest lawn.

I had some guy pull up next to me "Are you looking for a hooker that did something to your car!?"

Comon, no comparison.

I love the twisted thinking of politicians... Somehow spending a ton on light posts, trees, trendy signs, will magically make pimps, drug dealers, hookers and vagrants disappear...If anything it just displaces them.. But even in Inglewood, the attempt has failed foir the most part, I dont know why they would try it again.. All that new stuff they did down there, just gave the lowest rung of sociecty more stuff to steal and vandalize... Inglewood is still a shithole with crackwhores flashing their dirty titties at traffic, and homeless people shitting on the sidewalk in public.
I think I have seen it all down there, from stoners fornicating on a bus bench, to bag lady's stealing stuff out the backs of trucks..
Revitilization doesnt help anything, and it just angers me when I here it out of the mouths of city council. It doesnt attack the heart of the problem, nor does it ever try to help the people at the heart of it. Spend the money on drug rehab, and mental health centres..
On one hand the city wants to enable that kind of lifestyle with needle centres/needle drops and methadone, but on the other spends the other golden brick cleaning up the shit from the other end of the problem they enable...
I dont agree with Bronco's spending on 26 million for cops either, buying more cops isnt going to get the mentally ill help nor is it going to aid people in addiction problems. There are cops eating in the city cafeteria, watching people sell drugs, use drugs and assault each other directly across the street...They cannot be bothered to do anything , as all it does is become an exercise in paperwork apparently... Arresting them means nothing, they get a shower, food and then released, its like a five star hotel for a night or two... Some of those peoplse are probably doing their darndest to try and get arrested..
When they knocked down the general hospital way back when, and decommissioned the psych ward, alot of those people just ended up on the streets...

i agree with MAXT

what a lot of hating on this board.

for pawnshops, porn stores, look at 17 ave sw see whats there, look at drugs on 17 ave sw, its all there and common. more bars on 17 ave sw then se.

forest lawn has its good and bad just like any other large community.

i live in albert/park raddision heights right NEXT TOO forest i would say its VERY disarable only community east of downtown with a nice view.

murders are happening all over calgary.

Yes we know forest has some sudanese, but they appear to be moving to rundle

that sounds true and very agreeable the way you put it
but i wouldn't move from uptown to forest lawn for sure
it's one thing to live by urself and handle urself in a tough neightbourhood
but when you have kids you think twice or three times about the future constantly

all i can say is there is no way you can clean up forest lawn.... its like trying to kill weeds in a 2 acre lot, no matter how hard you try its gonna spread anyways. you may slow the progress but the problem will still be there.

each city has its own sector thats rundown, and has major violence problems. i really don't think there is any city (i may be wrong about this) that dosn't have a part of the city thats gonna have these sorts of things.

You guys are right. Theres always gonna be a run-down part. And hell, Im in the NW, leave it square across town from me in the SE, thanks :).

I dont understand the citys point of view for needle drop offs and clean locations. Do they think the run of the mill crack-man is gonna be bothered to go drop off his needles? Clean needles, sure, lets prevent disease from spreading amoungst the cities "finest".

Instead of spending money on needles for herion addicts, buy me a lobster dinner and call it a night.

Call me greedy, but I FUCKING love lobster.

id say in 50 years forest lawn will be a decent neighborhood...but thats after they build a community past the garbage dump right beside forest lawn.

no offense to anyone that lives in the area but all you have to do is look at the people that make up the community to see how the community is. The way they live and how the community is managed is just not right and most likely will never be. I went and looked at some condos in that area just about 9 months ago...they seemed pretty nice at the time and looked like a good invesment...however i went and took a look at them about 2 weeks back and they seem to have turned into any other lot in that area.

The only decent part of 17th are those buildings accross from eliston park. Atleast they look decent from the outside.

And like others said above the only way to revitalize that area of 17th is to wipe out the whole area and rebuild it which would take 50 years:D

i say spend the money on getting the homeless off the streets then worry about giving them nicer shit to steal and vandalize

Wtf are you talking about?
Everyone knows that people from forest lawn are living in caves and dont even have electricity, let alone the internet. Last I heard they just got "the wheel".

In all seriousness, whats the BRZ? and how are 3 communities all in different quadrants considered the same area?

Am I the only one confused?

It's not the location, housing, or anything that makes it a crappy place. It's the people. When I grew up I lived in whitehorn, and that was considered a NICE neighbourhood. (*disclaimer - In no way shape or form am I being racist, this is purely my own observations and I am making a general observation, not directing this at any one person or group.*) But the minorities came and ravaged the place like a locust swarm. Rented/bought houses, destroyed them, and then sold them off for half the value. The place is now considered by most, "the ghetto" lol.

Forst Lawn IS cleaning up. The bums are leaving (cause they cant afford to live in $300,000 homes anymore), and rents are WAY up.

In my block alone, 5 years ago, 6 houses on the block housed "bums", now, there are NONE left.... mine were the last ones, and they got the punt last week.

at 300k + for a home in the area. Alot of home owners are selling, kicking the renters out.

And with it's close proximity to DT it's getting better really quick.

Give it about 5 years and it'll be a whole new community.

Forest lawn does have a bad name and thats its problem:

People only reinforce the "ghetto" Fact of the North East, in areas of the Northeast where you have proud homeowners that take care of their homes, and lives, you dont have problems... You have problems when you have people who beleive the neigbourhood is trash, and dont care about what they own or what others own... I have lived in the North for 18 years now( iam 18 woot!) and i have seen, heard, and even been friends with people who are now contributors to the trashy lifestyle of this area (thank god i stopped being arround them years ago) Its all about mentality, if you have grown up all your life under a home that is made up of a store clerk and a part time worker at Co-Op and all you hear everday is how crappy the neighbourhood is all day and you see no way of being somone ever its going to have an impact...

My buddy told his older brother that my sister is a host of a mainstream TV show, he didnt beleive it until he saw her and the last name... he told me when he saw me... "Man i didnt beleive them, and when i saw her i was like WTF! i cant beleive somone made it out of the North and made it big..."

I just said its because i never heard of her ever saying this was it for her, she NEVER let the north hold her back... and it has helped... If ANYONE from the north is reading this if anything we need to slowly change the Neighbour hood, those people trashing it arent going to change unless their neighbours change on them... Just make bonds with your neighbours (which i see a lack of) and make a positive mentality of the North.... I know near 17th there truely is a problem.. but careless Landlords and ever more carless tennants are a contributing problem to the area... not to mention the literal Trailer home park wraped in a fence and looks like a Car tow-away compound...

As House prices go up, i guarantee you will see a change in where people live... in the 300's you will see much more representable people start moving in and more of the problem makers migrating to a similarly cheep area of town...

Last thought... Get rid of Rentals!! I know there are some rentals that are taken care of, but how many rentals do renovations, take VERY good care of their home, and always strive to take steps to better their surroundings??? Especially mulit-teen homes that split the rent... Remove Rental properties, and you already have 25% of the problem fixed.. maybe more...

dragonone
06-19-2006, 05:59 PM
really, the rentals here in uptown/downtown seem fine

i know its been a few months but I do see more and more "yuppies" professionals moving in the raddison heights/alberta park area

a man down the street in albert park owns a 2 door bently, owns a communications firm
