The new 4-Runner's are cool, and you can't beat Toyota quality. There's the Nissan X-Terra, also the Honda Element (ugly!).

Your messed up - you can get tons of SUVs for 40K but the 4runner ain't one of them.
Check out the Xterra, the Murano, the Pathfinder, the Tribute, or the Envoy. They are all pretty decent suvs

I believe the 4runner starts at 39K
Pathfinder is finished, xterra sucks, honestly, absolutly horrible vehicle. I think its the only SUV, compact or midsize, to still use leaf springs

Murano, its kinda high prices, i doubt you can get one for under 40, coz the pathfinder is a model under and you end up paying almost 40 for the middle model pathfinder...
4 runner will easily go past 40 with some taxes even with barganing.
Ranger_X31:
The xterra was built like that for a reason...there cheap, affordable midsize suvs... and best bang for buck...
fords and chevys....*haa tuhh*...get something that will out last its warrenty...
toyotas, hilander or was it sequia.. the smaller one is okay.
honda element/pilot are pretty good too, some of the more effiecient suvs. Pathfinder is a gas guzzler, but very luxo' for what you pay.

As soon as you have one in your driveway, let me know. Because we've had TWO. Not one, Two. And neither were purchased for under 40k.

.
Much like ford and chev could keep the trailblazer and explorer prices as low as the Xterra if they still based them off of the Ranger and S10. The Xterra is based off of the Frontier which is a horrible truck.
The Highlander is only a couple grand up in price. Its based on a car platform, very refined ride.

The VW Tourareg (right spelling?) will be starting in the 40-45k range from what I heard. It's basically a Porsche Cayenne without the big brakes (and looks better!).

I drive an Escalade off and on...thing is a boat and drinks gas like water. Pretty pimp and comfy though. When I was in Vegas, there were Escalades lowered with 20+" rims...that's what I call pimp.

ALL SUV"S SUCK!!!
I will never own one and 99% of the people that have one don't deserve one. They dont' know how to drive them and always seem to be the people who cut you off.

Its over your price range but I have a 2002 Durango R/T (wife drives it to bus the kids around etc...) and I love it.
But, if you wait till summer you can get them with the HEMI instead of the 5.9...

for under 40k, I'd go with an X-Terra... its larger than the other cheaper "SUVs" (rav4, crv) and has decent power. It can haul 5 people and a set of wheels & tires around so its pretty good haha.
