My friend told me about a friend of his who said she was cheering for the Oilers because they were Canadian, and the Canes were American. My reply?

"tell her she's an unoriginal bitch who can't grasp the concept of city vs city and should resort to watching curling instead"

Same to the rest of you idiots who don't get that the NHL is a city versus city sport, not a country vs. country.

Flames fans that say congrats on the Oilers run, have shown some class.

The other that just have nothing but trash to spew... must be nothin but trash.

Show some class kids.
You had a great run on '04
We had one in '06

Hopefully the Alberta teams can be the class of the NHL in the years to come...

The better team won tonight. Edmonton choked, hard. They embarrased the Canes in game 6, which fired them up more for tonight.

Id cheer for any other team in the league over the greasers. Its not the team I hate. Its you stupid loud cocky fans that dont know when to shut up and admit that your team was human after all. :thumbsdow

Yup. Why the hell can't some people grasp that? I was born in America, but I still didn't cheer for Carolina because of that. I cheered for them because I'm in Calgary and the Oilers are from Edmonton.

It's called a rivalry.
I hate oilers fans for kicking me while we were down in '04. But... that's all part of the game.

Patting each other on the ass and wiping off each others' tears cheapens the rivalry. Just because one of the teams was eliminated doesn't make it any less intense or relevant for me.

There are some fans on each side of this rivalry that are obviously brainless. So if you wanna direct your pissiness at them go to it.

I didn't waste my time hatin on the Flames during their run. And most of the Flames fans I know aren't wasting their time posting some of the pointless shit you see in here.

I would rather cheer for an American team than ANY team from Edmonton... well except the Bears.

And actually, you guys are still the big losers, because YOU JUST LOST THE STANLEY CUP!!!!!!!! And you also burned down and destroyed your own city in the process. Congrats!!!!

Please, just let that sink in for full effect.

PS I hope MacT doesn't kill any more innocent people once he returns to Edmonton trying to drive home in his drunken stupor trying to ease the pain.

Dear Oiler Fans,

If you don't know how to read please get a literate adult to help you
understand this letter and I encourage you to respond but try to do so
using whole sentences.

A couple of very peculiar things have come to my attention recently, the
first is this car flag thing. Lets just all admit that this is a Calgary
Flames fan idea, I would like to offer this as the first piece of evidence
that Oiler fans are jealous of Calgary. It appears to me that Oiler fans
are completely fair weather as it gets, these Oiler flags have been
available all year but it seems they decided to put them on after the first
round, you got to love Edmonton's belief in their team!

The second peculiar thing is "The Blue Mile"... Where have I heard that
before? where where where... OH I remember! CALGARY with it's Red Mile, I
will offer this as the second piece of evidence that Oiler fans wish they
lived in Calgary. Come on, any person with half a brain could have thought
of something, ANYTHING, more original. "The Oil Slick", "the goal light
district" ANYTHING!! The truly amusing thing is the Red Mile (or 17th Ave
S.W.) is what it is due to the fact the Saddledome empties into it. In
Edmonton after you leave Rexall (or whatever the name is this year) you
have to travel through 20 kilometres of ugliness, concrete, mullets and
people with no chiclets before you get to Whyte Ave. Maybe Oiler fans were
just unclear on the concept. In addition the Red Mile in 2004 had a special
feel because we beat the best!! This year the Oilers have had to beat the
worst the west had to offer so please don't pretend to think you have
anything on the aura of the 2004 Calgary Flames although it's clear by now
you wish you were Flames fans.

I am a little happy for the Oiler success this year it will give you
something to talk about that isn't 20 years old and involves Wayne Gretzky,
it will rejuvenate the battle that was missing for far to long in this
province of which you are the Capital...in name only, certainly not in
money, size, population and looks. ( I would take a FLAMES GIRL over a Whyte Ave dog any day!!)

In conclusion Oiler fan if you want to be Calgary Fans so much, just cheer
for Calgary, make up some of your own ideas and please please sign Roloson
to a long team contract. I can't wait until he lets you down next season.

Regards,
Flames Fans

It's sad for Oiler fans. Us Flames fans know how they feel. However, the better team did win this time (we won game 6 in 2004). I'm glad Commodore got his ring :)

I'm not gonna lie to you....I'm incredibly glad the Canes won the cup!

Does that make me a traitor? HELL NO it doesn't, but I'm a die-hard Flames fan and like others said it's a rivalry.

Plus, how many 'die-hard' Oilers fans were cheering for the Flames when they played Tampa two years ago. If you were then you aren't a true Edmonton fan. My dad is a die-hard Canucks fan and for the entire 04 playoffs he cheered for all the opponents that Calgary faced.

Suck it up....Edmonton choked in Game 7 much like Calgary did in Game 7 of the first round.

All I can say is that I was the happiest guy in the pub 2night! I was roaring out loud whenever the Canes made a great play, and they made a hell of a lot of amazing plays tonight.

I'll give props where they are earned: Jossi played well for coming off cold off the bench this series, however did you truly think Ward would let in more than a goal in the 7th game? I was expecting a shut out.

Ward definately deserved the MVP, I'm definately looking forward to seeing how he progresses next year being the starting goalie for the Hurricanes.

Go Canes Go!

I am a dihard Flames fan and have been science i was 6 so 19 years and i have to confess i have 2 faviorite teams the Flames and..........................................................................whoever is playing the oilers!!!!!!!!
Its not a canada-u.s. thing and anyone that says that is a bandwagon jumper who started cheering for the oilers about halfway through round one.
And i am saying that to the losers that were calling the Flames in 04 Canada's team and those same jackasses that were saying after the Flames were eliminated this year that we shouldn't take the flags off of our cars cause we should show our support......
Support what??? them golfing.......you might as well say that even though summer is over you should keep wearing shorts well into winter.........the seasons over and when a seasons over you put that seasons gear away till the next season.

Sorry i kinda went off on a rant there

Maybe because it's hard to like a city that proclaims itself the 'city of champions' even though they haven't won a Cup in over 15 years and have the same amount of Grey Cups as Calgary in that span. Maybe because it's a city that really has nothing to offer outside of a mall. Maybe because it's a city where the mullit is still fashionable. Maybe because when people hear the word 'Edmonton' the first thing that comes to mind is 'trailer park'. Why else.:dunno:

Blind patriotism at its best. I think it's pretty obvious that you read the thread title, and then decided to hit 'reply' without reading what anyone has been saying. One more time: it's a city versus city sport, not a country vs country one!

You think Edmonton gives a fuck that you're cheering for them because they're Canadian? Most likely they are looking down on you if you are. I know when I was cheering on the Flames in 04, I didn't give a shit who else in Canada was with me. Thanks but no thanks - all I need is the support of fellow Calgarians, not the other NHL cities who dropped out.

Also, what has Calgary won in the past 15 years? Considering that we have 2 major sports teams...

But hey, what has Edmonton won in the past 15 years?

...

Seriously, think before you post.

No we have never been the 'city of champions' because we have never proclaimed to be that. Nobody ever proclaimed it for Edmonton either. Edmonton just decided that they were going to call themselves that. Kind of like a little kid that proclaims he's Superman. It's kind of cute. When it comes from a city it's kind of lame.

And what attitude is that?

BTW: Don't hate on Calgarians because Mcleans Magazine called Calgary the new 'Center of the Universe'. At least we didn't make a sign at the entrance of the city proclaiming that.

Actually the name was adopted after the Edmonton tornado and all of the city coming together to help rebuild and get everything back to normal.

It has nothing to do with the accomplishments of the Esks or the Oilers.

On July 31, 1987, a devastating tornado, ranked as an F4 on the Fujita scale, hit the city and killed 27 people. The day became known as "Black Friday". Mayor Laurence Decore cited the community's response to the tornado as evidence that Edmonton was a "city of champions", which later became the city's slogan.

1st- You actually think "car flags" was a calgary idea?? Well shit better start bashing carolina too, they had car flags!!

2nd- the media called it the blue mile, not everyone on it. I do believe it was called the oil slick.

3rd- "20 kilometres of ugliness, concrete, mullets" have you ever been to edmonton and gone from rexall to whyte ave? For one its no wehre near 20km's, the FIRST thing you go thru is the river valley, tons of trees, golf course.

Good run for the oilers just like the flames had in 04, we both ended up in the same position, WE BOTH BEAT THE TOP TEAM IN THE LEAGUE(detroit)

The Oilers have accomplished:
Auctioning the farm for a failed playoff run (And dont' say finals 'aren't failed'. You all said the Flames lost, so by that logic, so did you. (plus OUR disallowed goal could have won us the stanley cup...yours would have made you look even worse in game 7)
having a Chris Pronger who passes great, shoots good, covers decent, and skates bad, and loses battles in the corners. A Jason Smith who gives pucks to Rod Brind'Amour for free goals that make Conklin look worse than he really is (and that's a hard thing to do) A UFA in Spacek, Roloson, Samsonov and Peca...resigning Roloson = bye bye 3rd rounder. Leaving a questionable defensive core, the rest were NOT worth mentioning, and the first line where you left off at the season start (Horcoff, Hemsky and straight sticked Smyth) No Samsonov, No Peca. The Flames, have built an 8 man solid defensive core (Phaneuf, Hamrlik, Regehr, Leopold, Warrener, Ference, Giordano, Richie Regehr) and even the last 2 would be probly 4th/5th Dmen on the majority of other teams. We HAVE our top 3 draft picks. You have your 3rd....until you resign Roloson. conclusion? Oilers suck, and will still suck years from now.

We don't need all 8 of them. Unless you're misinformed, you should know that you don't have 8 defensemen dressed per game. Even our 2 worst defensemen would be 4th or at the worst 5th defensemen on any other team. If we can't sign any good scorers in the off-season, one of the men can be expendable. My conclusion still stands...currently, the Flames are built better than the Oilers. They have some restructuring to do. The run to the cup hurt them, as current Oilers players slated to go UFA on the 1st will want more money.

Calgary needs to get at least 3 forwards into their lineup, this to me means they need to spend some money that they don't have. Good luck, there is nobody out there right now that they can get. As time continues to pass the list keeps getting shorter.

I agree and hope to god they do, I like Calgary but they are one of the most boring teams in the league to watch.

You need some new second line forwards, maybe even a third liner or two, a goalie, at least 2 defensemen. We need: A good centre, and MAYBE an extra second line winger. Depth doesn't come cheap.

We need 2 centermen IMO.

I think Edmonton would be fine if they keep Markkanen. He got them to game 7 of the finals, what more can you ask for?

^ Agreed, I don't think that Edmonton needs a goalie. There offense doesn't need much, and they maybe need a defenseman. IMO they have alot more depth than Calgary does. I also think that Calgary's style of "Sutter" hockey will not work in the new NHL.

"You guys", how do you know my opinion on him. I have said all along that either Conklin or Markannen could be good goalies given the chance. It's hard for a goalie to gain any confidence when he is being switched back and forth with two other goalies.

Don't paint all fans with the same brush.

I cheered for Carolina last night, not Edmonton. I'm from Calgary and have never cheered for the Oilers.

If you are a true Flames fan, you will never cheer for the Oliers.
If you are a true Oliers fan, you will never cheer for the Flames.

It's got nothing to do with Canada vs USA or anything like that. If Ottawa, Van, Montreal was playing, I would cheer for them because they are a Canadian team, but not the Oilers. If you were a big Flames fan growing up, your not going to jump on their bandwagon, EVER!!!

They have money and the salary cap ceiling is higher. I sure hope they upgrade with a couple of forwards but they did get over 100 points and won the division and didn't lose any significant players in the offseason so it won't be the end of the world if they don't bring in any big-name players.

Much more question marks regarding the Oilers in the offseason. Oiler fans shouldn't get ahead of themselves. Yes they made the final but as far as recent history goes the Cinderella teams fail to make the playoffs the following season. Except the Flames of course.:D
