Backfiring at all?

Check if you've broken a rocker arm (just take the valve cover off and look at them)

Happened twice to my wife's `72 Gto, first time had me confused as hell what was going on. I thought it was timing chain jumped until I took the valve covers off, and bingo, there one was broken in 2.

Check the rocker's anyways, it's easy enough, with my wife's car it was the exhaust rocker broken, so it backfired through the carb, if the intake rocker was broken, it would be noisy, but wouldn't backfire...

Did this coincide with lots of puddles of water, and driving through them, within the last week? Have you checked out the plugs, wires, and distributor?
