I'm looking at these.
Are the syncros really rare? What are the specs on the models? Are they very reliable?
I think the entire car looks very nice except for the (non existant) grille and headlights. Are there any nice conversions or aftermarket grilles you can put on them?

Thx

syncros have the G60 engines. they are AWD which is cool. For VW stuff check out C1VW - here (http://www.c1vw.com)

A friend of mine knew a guy that used to work for a VW dealership's service department. According to him, Passats were horrible and were always constantly breaking down. Not sure if that's true, but that's what I was told.

90-93 Passats are known to break down alot, i can vouch for this, i use to own a '91 GL and it was quite the lemon. It was a Great Car though (when it worked) There are alot of problems in the electrical systems or something, i think VW Tried too much too soon as thier earlier models were alot less complex. As well, Stay away from the Automatic Tranny's or your just asking for trouble.

Never did own one, but I heard the Passats in that period were to be steered clear from.

I wonder why that was? Corrados were in production that time too and they were unreliable.

Were these vehicles made in Mexico or Germany?

i believe Mexico, but i could be wrong. I dont think they have too much of a reliablility problem. The G60 was never the best motor, but it shouldnt fall apart within a day. "shouldnt"

Raddos and Passats were German.

ok. so it was the MK3 jetta's and golfs that were mexican then.

so the mexican made vw's were more reliable than the german made ones? :dunno:

where the car was made doesn't make a diff...it was an issue they had with all g60's.

not all passats and corrados had g60s, what about the 6 cyl ones?

Really? I've heard that Corrados have all sorts of problems, whether its a G60 or VR6, particularily almost everything electrical.

Ben, do you know what the performance of a Passat is with your engine?

I've had a 90 G60 Corrado for 5 years. It was chipped, cammed, tracked and was a blast to drive. Never had a single problem with it.

The G60 is based on the standard bulletproof 8 valve 1.8L block found in Rabbits, Golfs and Jettas. What's not bulletproof was the G lader. It's not hard to rebuild it though.

stock the 2.0L 16v is 134hp/133tq.

92 GTI's with the 2.0L 16V ran 0-60 in 7.6

92 Passats were quite a bit slower due to the extra weight and generally they were autos.

the syncros had the G60
the GL's had the 2.0L 16v
the GLX had the 2.8L VR6

Yeah, my Aunt used to have one of these, I actually used the Passat for my drivers test.
So, I guess hers wasn't the only lemon huh? :)
When she sold it, is was explicitly sold "as is"

I had a '91 Passat GL, I liked it a lot. It did have a couple problems but I don't think anything beyond what any car that age might encounter. Unfortunately mine was an autotragic tranny. Stay very far away from those things. Power-sapping and never ever shift where you want when you want. Upshifts mid-corner, slow kick-down, etc. Handling was excellent. I had some nice sticky Bridgestones on there and it handled like a sports car. That was with the 15" stock wheels and 50 series tires. With taller tires on 14" rims a large part of the handling went bye-bye.

Syncros are extremely rare. If you're looking for one, if you find one, snap it up.

I think the better choice though unless you just have to have all wheel drive would be the GLX. 172 VR6 hp would really wake up that car. They are not that heavy really. Right around 3000lb for mine, which when you think about it is about the same as a "lightweight" Honda S2000.

I still want to some day build one up in a full-on Super Touring style - stripped out, one race seat, Stack display, slammed on 18s, big wing, wild paint and graphics, etc - I just think that would be cool

Oh and by the way the '94 Passats were the B4 chassis already, the '93 was the last of the B3 chassis - which look MUCH better than the B4, to my eye anyway.
