Toma

I hate the Stampede, and have always been curious....

Who gets all the money, profits, gate admissions....

Being the communist that I am, I had always "hoped" the money went back to the City, its overtaxed and inconvenienced citizens...

But the more I think about it.... I somehoe doubt it.

Anyone know the skinny??

I can't tell you where the profits go, but I can tell you this. Last night I was in the Bank in the Grandstand and they were doing their first money frop from the bars in the building (they usually do 2 a night). This was at about 830. The amount was $69,000. Thats no more than 10 bars, and only a few hours. They make a killing.

As it is a business, profits go back into the Stampede and probably also into the bonuses of Board members. Although you have to remember that the Stampede brings mucho tourists, which is always good for the smaller businesses in Calgary. It's probably the biggest thing in this city, and it puts us on the international map.

If you look at a bar like Cowboy's which is charging $50 to get in and buy overpriced drinks, you become less disgusted by the CS. We all have fun during Stampede, who cares if they make money off of it. Its a capitalistic world after all...

I was in the bar industry for 15+ years....

I can tell you only a very select few businesses/bars/restaurants make any money.... generally, most other business drops off.... inlcuding a lot of retail, bars further from the "action" etc...

If its completely private, they have no right calling it the "Calgary Stampede"... they should rename it, just like they did to the saddle dome.

Did I mention I hate the fucking Stampede. :nut:

Cowboys and Ceili's are being torn down for office buildings next year (so i heard).

Props to Vickers. Anyone who can charge 50 a head to get into that dump deserves credit. It's always lined up with trash completely around the next block.

+3 to hating it.

Another thing, they did raise the rodeo prize money big time... The people who are on the Stampede board have no money problems that's for sure. It's an institution.

I think you need to move to Russia.

#1 Stampede is Heritage, something that make us different, unique. Otherwise, we'll just be another Edmonton.

#2 It brings in profits just like any Sports teams.

#3 I hardly worked all week, a big bonus.

Why not?

And what name change to the Saddledome are you referring to? From Olympic Saddledome to 'Canadian Airlines Saddledome' to Pengrowth Saddledome? They did that for money (and changed again because Canadian Airlines no longer exists).

They ought to be, at least partly, from the public money that goes to rebuild the saddledome every 10 years, and the new arena that will be built for them within the next 10.

The Flames do not own the Saddledome.

City owns the dome. Name change help revenue. Flames is a tenant. If the tenant doesn't like what they see, they'll move.

Simple as that.

Wow what a suprise... Toma hates the Stampede...

Move to N.Korea ffs and stfu

Its the history and heritage of our city and the west.. why the fuck do you live here if you hold so much contempt for everything western?

I am sure the thousands of tourists who flock to Calgary for Stampede spending hundreds of millions of dollars is a real burden on our city..

There are huge costs associated with organizing an event like the Calgary Stampede.

- The organizing staff and it's executives need to get paid.
- The cost of bringing in the vendors and Conklin.
- There is a huge insurance risk they pay for.
- Paying the entertainers. Performers like Nelly Furtado, Our Lady Peace, Theory of a Deadman, and Kenny Chesney don't come cheap.
- Paying for labourers during set up and take down.
- Organizing the parade.
- Maintaining the grounds, casino, racetrack, and stadium for the other 51 weeks of the year.
- Joint projects with Tourism Calgary to promote the city and the Stampede.

The bottom line is that yes, the Stampede pulls in a lot of money, but a lot of money also goes out. Just like any other business.

Kenny Chesney wasn't paid by the Stampede, it was a concert people paid to go to at the 'dome I believe.

Some facts and figures.. off my head..

The grandstands alone brought in over 800k (if I remember right) in beer sales last yr, and sold the equivalent of 600 000 cases of beer or something crazy, just in the grandstands!.. But the system they use for that cost them some money, not near that but a bit.. The amount of booze that goes thru that place is unreal.. The taps hardly close at some points, they just keep putting new cups under it.. Coyotes, 10 bux to get into the fenced off area over 10k people came thru in one day last yr, of course they didn't all pay, but thats just admission, not any of the drinks.. Ceilis, they can sell 60 kegs in one night, one keg is 120 pints, at what 5.75, 6? a pint? thats 40k in one night off beer sales alone.. These aren't this years numbers, just things I have heard in th past.. and then theres cowboys, you've seen the tent there, :nut:
Stampede also pays staff all year, some of whom I'm not sure why they keep around, as the times I stop in around there I never see them doing anything.. And where do they get all the vlt's and tables for the big 4? they must be rented from somewares, they were all leaving on trucks today....

You think Toma would do some research instead of stirring the pot with his communisim......:D

Overall, our annual Park visitors spend an estimated $345 million in Alberta, including $300 million spent in Calgary alone - the bulk of which supports local hotels, restaurants, retail shops and other businesses.

And the stampede corporation is a registered non-profit organization.

Smoke that in your pipe a little. Perhaps we should just shut'er down and leave the $345 million in other places.
