OK, my brother is up visiting for the week and was being an idiot one night and lost the key for his van. luckily the doors are unlocked, but he can't start the ignition. He has to drive back on Friday morning.

does anyone know what various options we have in calgary to start/drive the van? and what kind of cost are we looking at?

my dad and bro have some repair shops so it's not really a problem for them to replace the steering column if we have to break that, just looking for the cheapest option.

Plus, my bro is only 19 so kinda on a budget

thanks:thumbsup:

Pay a locksmith and learn a very valuable lesson.

If its a newer van talk to a dealer, they can cut a new key.

I swear i posted..

Anyways i called a place in the yellow book , it was 24/7 locksmith or whatever.. He came to my car , made me a key on the spot , and i think it was around $109. It was quick and painless.

what did it cost you to get it cut? also, is there a key code or something on the door? or can they look it up with the VIN?

With newer cars they have the key patern that matches the VIN on file so it is computer cut just like the original key. I got one for my old Cavalier that way, I can't remember the price but I believe it is comparible to getting a locksmith (of course depends on manufacturer).

just to update and let everyone know,

we went to a dealer and had a key cut for $9 :D

it was a US car and so the dealer couldn't look up the key code, but we called my dad (who knows the dealers well from buying parts) and he was able to get the key code for us
