I need to get an extra key, maybe 2 for my 99 e36. Aside from the dealership, are there any other places that you can get a key? And are there any DIY ways to program the key if it's not done at the dealership?

CRAZY! I was just gonna post the same thing!

How much does the dealer charge?

Anyone have an answer?

I believe it'll be easier for Topher to get a key than lint. This is because lint has the immobilizer chip built into his key. Where as for Topher, it's basically only a key.

I just called bmw gallery. $200 for a key with built in remote, pre-paid as it had to be ordered from BMW. $80 for a regular key.

I asked about the chip and the immobilizer, and they guy had no clue. He kept talking about the chip in the key with the remote. I asked about the regular key, no remote, no LED etc. He couldn't even tell me if there was an immobilizer or not. I've found blanks on ebay, $90 for 2 switchblade with remote style. But I haven't found anything regarding programming yet.

Those flip keys I KNOW will not work with a 96+ car. I've looked into it.

True, they are laser cut, but they have to be programmed for your vehicle.

They are not cheap, and there is no way to get around it. For 99+ e46's, I know they need to come from the dealer.

Any car i think after 92 when the EWS stage 1/2 is equipped in the car.

The key has a chip in it that turns off the immobolizer of the EWS system. With out the chip in the key programmed to your specific car it will not work.

I could get into details about how it works. But i won't ;)

The dealership also needs you to have valid registration and you have to be the person it is registered under.
