Is there anything to watch out for when buying used other than check it with a mechanic?

Would it be better going through a dealership or through private sale?

Any car types to look out for?

Would be looking for a simple driver.

Thanks for any info. :D

I dont like getting ripped off enough to buy through a dealership.

dealer you pay gst. I would highly recommend getting a mechanical inspection done. I think that tells you more than a carfax or carproof. Make sure you also do a lien search and get it cleared up if you decide to buy the car. And do your research.

Buying from a dealer has its advantages.

1. Checking into liens on the vehicle is the responsibility of the dealer, if they sell you a vehicle with a lien on it they are responsible for it.

2. A dealership must provide you with a mechanical fitness certificate completed by a licensed mechanic, this will give you a good idea of the overall condition of the vehicle.

3. Dealerships are required to look into the vehicles history and disclose any information found, this includes any accidents, odometer tampering, where it has been registered in the past, etc...

IMO as for being ripped off by dealerships, it is a business and they are operating with the intention of making money. It comes down to the buyer being happy with the vehicle they have purchased and the price they purchased it for regardless of the margin the dealership is making on the vehicle. If they buyer is not happy with the price or the vehicle then they should not purchase it.

Watch out for possible flood damage on any used vehicle u consider buying. Check carpeting for color differences.

Both has it's advantages and disadvantages. Some smaller lots can be a bit shady, whereas the big name ones like Ford or Honda have a reputation to keep, but that's not to say they can't be shady as well. Do some homework on the car you want to make sure the price is right and it's mechanically sound.

If you go private then:

Check for liens (done at any registry)
Get a mechanical inspection done by someone YOU trust, not chosen by the seller (unless you trust them as well)
Make sure any problems are either fixed beforehand or the price is lowered due to problems
Check with your insurance company for any problems as well

Dealership is easier to handle, but you can get better deals on private sales, so its all personal choice. If you don't mind the hassle, go with private.

Definitly buy private, you get to see all records and what not, and if you can score big get your car off a first owner...
